I've read in a guide that "To craft custom weapons you must dock and enter a station, then click on Weapon Lab".
OK, I don't see any weapon lab in the stations I've pulled up to. Is this something I will only find in harder/"higher level" areas?

Every station has it, not the carriers though.
Go inside the station and dock, then press "enter station" at the top left, then on the next screen you have weapons lab near bottom left.
You'll need to have the required materials for building, they are listed on the right of the screen once you have entered the lab, red if you don't have them, green if you do. Note the materials must be loaded in your cargo bays or in your hangar bay and that you must have a free slot for the weapon you build (cargo or weapon slot).
Hope this helps.

I don't think it works for a free cargo slot - I think you have to have the appropriate Gun slot open (Beam or Cannon). From post: 179280, Topic: tid=12019, author=Beta_ver wrote:Every station has it, not the carriers though.

Paul is right. Before crafting a weapon, move the active weapon you want to replace into an empty cargo slot by right clicking on it. The crafted weapon will be automatically moved into the appropriate weapon slot when you click on the build weapon option. You can then transfer your previous weapon to storage in case you're not sure about the new replacement. Experimenting around is a lot of fun.

I can't find the button.
I've looked and looked.
I have Shipyard and Hanger buttons.
Do I need empty slots or have the materials to get the button to show up? (The guide suggests no, that I'd get a red background instead.)
Should I mention I am playing Evochron Mercenary?

Not necessarily. If the weapon slot is not available, a cargo bay will be used when the weapon is built, if available. Just double checked to confirm. From post: 179284, Topic: tid=12019, author=PaulB wrote:From post: 179280, Topic: tid=12019, author=Beta_ver wrote:Every station has it, not the carriers though.

I think it is version 1.8 something. I'll try clicking the 'update' button. From post: 179318, Topic: tid=12019, author=SeeJay wrote:Are you playing the expansion? Version 2.xxx

There have been numerous changes since 1.8 ... so, yes, updating would be a good idea. Depending on your method of DL, though, you might need to re-enter your key codes once the game has updated to 2.x.

Just took a look and update is already turned on. Clicking it just toggles what appears to be an auto update between on and off. From post: 179385, Topic: tid=12019, author=Marvin wrote:There have been numerous changes since 1.8 ... so, yes, updating would be a good idea. Google shows me: http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10061
Which leads to:
http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmerce ... nloads.htm
latest version: 2.918
So I will download that and run it or install it over my existing game. Hopefully my license will not be blown away, but even if it does I am sure I have that email from 2012 somewhere. I think this will work.

Installing the 2.x version magically made weapons lab and terrain walkers show up. Image that!
It also is now chopping off the left half of the chat box. I am searching tech support forum and google but not finding a solution.
Uninstalled and reinstalled that that did not fix it either.
Tried playing with the suggested variables in chattext.dat but that isn't fixing it either.
