Going to give it the college try.
Hello, just wanted to say hello. I'm a huge space sim addict. I recently tried getting into Freelancer again with mods, but I could not get into the dated graphics or the control scheme. I like the looks of Evochron, but during a demo I played a year or so ago, I stink at the combat and controls. I've been watching a lot of videos and I think I can get it down with practice. Once I get the hang of it, I'll jump in on multiplayer.
I'll be lurking in the shadows, learning all I can. See you around.

So far I've mined, done a few errand missions. The map is hard to utilize, I end up jumping all over the place. Also, combat was hard to initiate. I tried some of the tips, destroyed one ship, but I have a hard time with the flight model. Still, I had fun, with a little frustration.

Thanks for the tips folks. I'll start reading through them some more and keep trying my hand at flying. I don't have a joystick, so I'm trying to master the mouse and keyboard. In my early days of space sims, I was quite adept at flying with the keyboard only in Wing Commander on my parents IBM computer with a EGA monitor. Those were the days.

I hate flying into a station, is there a autopilot function to dock you or land you on a planet? Just curious, I have a tendency to wreck.

keep the "heading" in mind, when in a station area your docking will be aligned with "0°"
edit : i'm not sure about this.. but the... shoulb be at 0 not the heading the... dunnno this word
you can dock at max speed when keeping the right angle
in the very near of station there is a field to, sometimes when maneuvers are wrong this field attract the ship and it get really mad inside the cockpit

The only autopilot function we have in-game works for the long jumps, rather well. Lest you should get a joy-stick, kybd/mouse flight control does take some practise-in-depth, hammering down that muscle memory thing. I know several pilots, one of whom is one-handed, who solely fly with kybd/mouse. And they fly circles 'round the rest of us! All the time ! Go figure !

As for planets. Nope. Watch your speed and make all planetfall attempts via manual control. Hyper-jumping to a planet is a one-way ticket to oblivion.

Slowly figuring it all out. Popped on a server last night, but it was empty with the holidays and all, but hopefully I'll be able to fly with a few of you.

Ahh very cool, the expansion looks neat. I picked up Mercenary on the Steam Autumn sale and a few other space games for a good price, but I keep playing Evochron. Great game so far.

Can anyone tell me how you hover on a planet. I'm trying to mine and seem to crash a lot. Another question I have about planets is when a distress call comes out. When I answer that distress call do I just type coordinates into the nav computer or will doing that send me crashing into the planet? I'm having problems landing on a planet when I answer a distress call for meds or food.

Well, staying in IDS-mode, throttle control/adjustments downward, reducing speed, maintaining your bearing/heading. Altitude will adjust downward as you slow forward speed. Sometimes, earlier on in my career, I've employed/deployed the M/T beam (below about 5 grand AGL) to give me a "visual" AGL/ASL reading/"feel", aside from the altimeter read-outs. Keep slowly adjusting your speed downwards (towards zero forward accelleration) and maintaining "steerage" headweigh. Eventually, you will attain "equilibrium" at hover, really. It does take practise and perseverance. You will get the "knack" of it in short order.
Regards the D.C./NavComp: It might help if you can get near enough to the intended victim, prior to entering anything in the NavComp. This might help you to keep from performing a planetary or asteroid face-plant. The X-Y-Z nav points in the D.C. message should get you "near", as opposed "too close".

You guys are awesome with the replies and help. Another question if I may. When a distress call comes out for lets say a planet requiring medical supplies. When the coordinates are given, do I just type them in and jump? Or is that a bad idea and land me into the planet. Still trying to get a feel for everything. Thanks for all the help.

Unless you're really, really lucky, the distress call you see in Chat will be coming from a different star system. So, the first thing you must do is compare the sector coordinates for the call with the quadrant map coordinates to determine which system is in play. If it's more than a couple jumpgates away, you probably won't get there in time ... especially if you need to go planetside. Also, IIRC, in-sector coordinates aren't given when the distress call originates from a planet. You get the planet's name and it's up to you to dock at the main city ... it looks like this on the Nav map:

Heya RedFalcon, I know I bugged you on Steam a bit
Well I'm a mining wizard, I've upgraded my ship to four cargo slots and go out and mine. I'm a bit wary to go into combat just yet, as I'm still getting my ship upgraded to how I want it. I want some strong shields before I delve into that element. Though I've snuck up on some Energy faction people and obliterated them on a save game to test myself out. I'll eventually move out of the starter system
