One thing that really surprised me was the weapon crafting system. That got my thoughts running.
Why not try and implement these, tinkering/building options more? Let's say you can use your money or resources to build a "home" for yourself and improve on it, add turrets to fight pirate ships, add living quarters for extra crew etc. Maybe a swimming pool
Building up your ship already implements this great gameplay mechanic.
What I am trying to get at is that one thing I LOVE about open sandbox games is the tinkering. You can fill a game world with mindless zombies but if you give me a box full of stuff to join, take apart, and rebuild into something useful to fight them off I will tinker for days, even years.
You don't need to make the world dynamic - although that would be great. But more tinkering possibilities (I'm thinking mindcraft and Terreira) would be terrific.
You don't even need destructible terrain or anything. Just use mining resources and credits to build stuff that you can combine to do other stuff...
Anyways. I'm waaaay to early for any real suggestions since I only launched the game last night. But I just had to throw this out.
