Added music crashing game at 100%

Post by Sherlock »

Sorry to post such a waste of space, but even reading through all of the current threads, I cannot find a solution (or even work out the problem) with my added in music folder for Evochron Mercenary.
Here is a screenshot from windows explorer, of the entire folder (with item details)
http://db.tt/8rVkh2gg

I'll link a copy of the folder itself, if required, once it has been uploaded to dropbox.

Basically, I've narrowed the error down to when this folder is installed. Which is that a few seconds after the game reaches 100% in the loading screen, windows brings up a 'Evochron Mercenary.exe has stopped working' error message, and forces me to close the program (it appears to be frozen on 100% in the background at this point).

I cannot work out why this folder is causing this error; I have a heap of HD texture pack mods, and removed them all whilst keeping this folder, and it still crashed. Yet the game runs with all of them enabled and the music folder removed.

Anyone picking up a simple mistake in my music folder which may be causing this crash? o.O

Hey Sherlock!

You 've got quite a lot of music in your folder - maybe even too much. Maybe your RAM can't handle it. Try moving some of them into a different (temporary) folder, so they won't be loaded when starting the game and see if it works then. ;)

Hmm.. That did occur to me; but the manual says the game supports 100 off each level, and I've only got 14!

Plus I've got 4GB of ram, and I've run that large address aware thing on my .exe o.O

If worst comes to worst, I'll probably just chuck some songs out, but I was hoping there was some error in my formatting or song size or something which I'd looked over that was causing the crash :(

Hi and welcome.

Remove all music tracks but leave the 3 tracks for level 1 in the folder.

If that works, keep adding 3 tracks at a time and test for every set you add.

You could open the resource monitor in your task manager and check, wheter there is enough free RAM left to load the songs (before you start the game).

If that doesn't help, maybe you could put your folder into dropbox or something. I have 8GB RAM, so I could check it for you, to see, wether the files themselves are okay or not. But as far as I can tell you it's a matter of the overall filesize in that folder...

But maybe you don't have to take out some of them. If you find a way to compress them somehow (and still keep the .ogg-format) then this might do the trick as well.

...
Now it's not crashing :/

I was using JSGME.exe to manage my mods, and whenever copying the music folder, windows would say it was not responding, so maybe it kept corrupting the files or something o.O

:o If a set of files in a folder is too big for JSGME to handle, then it's also probably too big for the game.

Marvin is right: it's not a question about RAM, i've got 8 GB and still I can hardly load more than 3 sets. Presently I have the 3 music sets of version 1.8 in my musiic folder (which I like more). If I try to add a 4th one, sometimes the game will load sometimes not, so I just removed one set.

 That's the link I was looking for. Most importantly, the following quote from Vice:
There can only be three threat levels per group. If you exceed that, you'll likely encounter a crash when the game can't find a required threat level in a group. The format is this:

musiclevelX-Y.ogg

X is the group value, Y is the threat level. Y should never exceed 3 and should always have a full set of 1, 2, and 3 in each group. So each group would look like this:

musiclevel1-1.ogg
musiclevel1-2.ogg
musiclevel1-3.ogg

musiclevel2-1.ogg
musiclevel2-2.ogg
musiclevel2-3.ogg

And you could continue with set 3, 4, etc.

Maybe you have to have sets of 3 in the amount of sets of 3. For example 3, 6, 9, 12, 15....etc. So for example if you have 4, 5, 7, 8...etc. sets of 3 files it will not work!

You have 14 Sets of 3 files in your folder. The reasoning for this assumption is that people reporting adding a 4th and a 5th set seem to have problems and you having a set of 14 also are reporting issues.....I have not played around with the music files. But for you who do it is worth to try and see if my assumption is correct.....;)

So, have 15 sets 'cause 15 is divisible by 3?
