Radio Chatter?

Post by Cybertrash »

I may be talking out of my proverbial hind quarters here, but I seem to remember Evochron Renegades having very verbose "radio chatter" you would hear when flying near stations and ships.

When playing Evochron Mercenary however, I have yet to hear anything like it, only something that sounds like radio communications, but is extremely garbled, you can't make out any words.

Are these "clearer" messages still in Mercenary? I thought they contributed a great deal to the immersion in Renegades, and I was surprised when I didn't "find" them in Mercenary.

If they are indeed absent, how come?

(Also, I apologize in advance about the somewhat low "rhetorical" quality of this post, my brain appears to be working in low-power mode at the moment).

It IS more garbled in Mercenary than in legends.

The clearer messages in Legends became somewhat familiar after a while, there are only so many sound files that can be included. I think the more garbled chatter helps maintain the illusion it is different people having original conversations rather than the same voice saying the same thing again and again.

I think the garbled ones are in EM, but at lower volume.

I like how they did radio chatter in Freelancer. You could actually use the information if you wanted to.

In control options in Mercenary you can turn the in game voices off and you won't hear the radio chatter and you can use the volume control of effects which I think also increases the volume of the radio chatter.
I have mine turned off to save on memmory.....LOL...:P:P:P:P:P

 I remember hearing it clear enough to pick up the word "mercenary" ... wanting to edit that for a game mod and changing it to "pilot" (more generic). So some of it is there in Mercenary.

The radio chatter did seem instantly familiar, I would have been suprised if sound files had not been reused from Legends.

If it aint broke don't fix it. Nothing wrong with the chatter from Legends. More variety would always be welcome though.

Maybe someone in the community has the will and resources to produce more chatter of the required quality pro bono. Unfortunately I am not a voice actor or sound engineer and my voice is anything but generic so I can't really help.

Variety of unintelligible radio chatter is unlikely to be a deal breaker for anyone but I'm sure it would be appreciated.

You having a dig at my Scots accent, Marvin? Funny how, as soon as I say: "does anyone want a drink" they're all instant linguists! :)

The garbled background chatter has always been there, what I notice is the lack of station control, who used to ask ships their purpose and destination, grant docking clearance, issued system warnings etc. This appears to have been removed.

 Actually, Raven, that deep voice of yours would sound really good in-game. Especially when a ship is docking ... and you asking, "Does anyone (aboard) want a drink?"

This was what I was talking about, I can no longer hear station control, which I think is a bit of a disappointment, I thought it was a really neat feature in Renegades/Legends.

What I liked about MS Flight Sim were the ATC messages. To have such chatter ingame would seriously enhance it.

 Flight Sim voices are dynamic ... and take up a lot of space. Nice idea but, right now, the only chatter you'll hear directed directly at you, in Mercenary, comes from named adversaries (warning you that you've bitten off more than you can chew) and (IIRC) targeted trading partners.

But if size is an issue, how come that it was present in the earlier games?

Flight Sim type voices weren't in Legends. If they were in an earlier game, I wouldn't know. I was busy sinking ships in Silent Hunter II, III and IV.

Well I would be more than happy to add voices, and have the equipment to do studio quality recordings. I could also probably get friends to do the acting.

As far as the filesize problem, is it possible to be added as a module, separately downloaded? The game could simply lazy load the feature if its present in the right folder.

just a thought :)

Flight Sim has a set range of callsigns ... which is why ATC can call you directly ("pasting" together the aircraft type with a series of alpha-numerics). The callsigns in Mercenary are at the whim of its players ... impossible to place in a file.
