Range and COV detection might be something of a challenge for large objects such as planets, where you might have a smaller object in front or to the side that you want to select, but the planet's relative size in the HUD and/or position overrides such a selection.
 Ironic that that's been a problem with real radar ... until the addition of "velocity reject" circuits. Before that, it was very difficult to pick out small aircraft when looking down at a much bigger (and brighter) ground return. It also makes me wonder how you'd go about targeting any object that's inside a high-energy nebula.

My tip at starting: I'd say never go 'north' until you're ready.

The navigation system is great, but it cannot be used to track objects that do not show up on the NAV map.
That's true, although some objects are intentionally obscured/cloaked from navigation sensors to keep them fairly hidden and must be spotted visually. Apart from those though, are there any others that would need navigation tracking that aren't visible on the map?
I thought it would be nice if you could target asteroids in your HUD in order to get a more accurate idea of your distance from them as you approach. I know that at present all mineable asteroids in the game are the same size so it's easy to see just visually when you are close enough to mine, in which case that targetting option isn't necessary. But it could be more interesting if, in future versions of the game, there were asteroids of different sizes and shapes. Then knowing the precise distance would be more relevant... eg you might think the asteroid you are approaching is very big and far away so you speed towards it only to find that it is a small one and very close, and bang!, you smack right into it!

So far ive found that the most effective way to fight is to do an eliptical joust at roughly 1600ish with inertia on and take out the enemy ships on the pass. With a class 5 cannon I can take most of the ships im currently seeing in a single pass.
Are you who i think you are?
