Tried the demo, now: Buy it or not?

Post by haloterm »

Hello! :)

I have tried the Evochron Legends demo, but of course was not able to complete very much due to the time limit. My first impression is positive, but I still hesitate to buy the thing. Perhaps some of you might answer the following questions, to guide me in the right direction.

1. I'm playing on a netbook which is the only computer I have (don't laugh or insult me about this ...) , with an external monitor for using standard resolutions. As most netbooks, it has only an Intel onboard chip, which runs many games rather good (WoW, SIns of a Solar Empire, X2 ...) Evochron Legends does run fine, even in 1440x900 (my monitor's resolution), although 1024x768 would be enough.

However, landing on planets is a bit laggy, even in 640x480 and lowest settings. Is there a way to further speed up the graphics than reducing the details, or is there a way to access the planet's trading menu without actually having to land in this town? Can the town model replaced by a simplier one (I already recognized that Evochron can be modded)?

2. Even in native resolution, I have difficulties to read the texts and numbers in the cockpit. Are there any good cockpit mods that enhance readibility?

3. How long until the game gets boring? I mean, I very much like the freeform approach (this was something I always searched in the X series, but it had too much plot and too toy-like aliens), but what about the different missions?

4. Do I really need to have an internet connection whenever I start the game?

5. How many players are usually at the same time in multiplayer?

Thank you,
Mario

Hi haloterm, welcome to the forum and the Sim.
You can play the demo for longer if you go into the training mode and ignore the instructor, just fly around.

I play on my Toshiba A105 laptop with XP and have very few problems.

You have to land at the cities to trade.

There are HUD mods that work different. You would have to try them yourself to see what works 4 U.

Boring depends on your taste and needs.

No Internet connection needed for single player mode.

MP pilot numbers vary as we are world wide.:)

Hi haloterm!
I've plaied X series too, for 3 years: X2, X3, TC. Very good space game, very good.
But.... a month ago someone told me about Evochron: I've tried it, bought it. It's the first time for me in multiplayer, fantastic, great people here!!!
And.... in my opinion Evochron is the nowadays Elite!!!
If I were you.. I'd buy Evochron!;)

Lorenzo, from Italy!

EDIT: well, you bought it!!!

Thank you, BraveHart. I think it was a good decision to get this game. I made a good start again and already earned about 100.000 credits (compared to the X games, this is rather much for just 1 hour of playing ... what do I do with all this money later in the game?) but then I activated the jumpdrive while still facing an asteroid ... which killed me :-)

"lol", first lesson, save b4 U try something new. Use the money U earn to upgrade to better ships and/or equipment. Things get a bit pricey (lol). :(;):P

You will need those credits to buy licenses as well(station licenses). Don't forget to dock fees and missile-fuel costs, fleet outgoings as well :) You are in trouble actually :P

Docking costs money? Cool!

I already figured how to upgrade my ship. This is fun. Are there additional components in other systems than Sapphire?

I also won a race (where I just need to complete the track in the specified time), but another one not -- this track's design was more difficult.

However, I tried mining but I think I'm doing it wrong. When using the tractor beam, i don't see these red things mentioned either in the strategy guide or manual, even if I'm REALLY close to the asteroids.

What does happen, by the way, when I accidently run out of fuel? Is there a way to send a distress signal?

Great game so far. Lots of possibilities for creating fictional stories.

Yes, some items are blacked out and those might be available somewhere else. Also, some equipment can be found in far-flung places.

Do you see the blue beam during mining? You can mine asteroids, planets or atmosphere. The particles will only show up for asteroids.

When you run out, you're dead. I got lucky once, and propelled myself in the direction of the station docking bay from 3000 clicks away with my last drop of fuel. Flew right in a few minutes later. Was awesome.

Don't frighten the poor boy, Rami!
If you run out of fuel, the only distress call is to jion MP and ask for help. Someone will come along & help.

He did not frighten me, instead I'm impressed that the physics of the game does allow such emergency actions -- using the last bit of fuel and drifting until a haven is reached. This is just great and reminds me of dramatic sci fi scenes :)

Plus:
Using different profile slots for save prevents falling of unwanted situations like out of fuel, lost in space and much more!
If you want to discover, use different saving slot and go for it.

With reference to the tractor beam during mining: You realise that you either have to keep the "B" key depresssed, or, alternatively, hit Alt "B", which keeps the tractor beam working until you hit "B" again. Have fun!

And, welcome to the forum, and the game, see you in MP.

Mining now worked. I recognized I was simply to far away; the asteroid has to fill my whole field of view, then everything is fine. Thanks for the ALT+B hint.

Interestingly the tractor beam does not consume energy. This is a little strange, 'cause I was able to leave my ship 10 minutes alone until my 2x25 cargo hold was filled (lots of platinum, some metal).

Haloterm,

You should consider joining a clan like SD (Star Destroyers) these guys will help you with missions, rank and cash. Not to mention protection against newbie killers like Romulan's.

Concerning the specialities of EL, I'm still a newbie. But why not join a clan as newbie, esp. if its a plan not devoted to conquer? :)

Hello all,

I have just joined the forum but am at sea at the moment and unable to download the game.

Needless to say i have read all the reviews and this game looks a piece of art and 'Vice' certainly has done an outstanding job, i'm excited and can't wait to download the demo and try it with the scope to purchase.

I have one favour, as i am stuck at sea for the next 3 weeks, i would apreciate if some one could email me the game manual so i could get a head start before i get home.

This looks to be an enjoyable game and you guys and gals look to be a friendly bunch, can't wait.

Yours Aye,

uVAVu.
