well a bit of a spoiler, but I recently found a hidden crate with better cannons in a certain sector north of sapphire.

it also may help having a science officer onboard :)

then make sure you have a better ship and you may find your survival odds improving:)

Oh oops, I forgot to post what I think about this and instead only posted about the airfight rules. Stupid me.

I disagree about easier combat - if you want a 1 versus 1 fight, you can simply pick on a single reddie.

Here you go.....

Offtopic, back to topic.

I really don´t think we need a different AI, depending on different sectors. What we need is a different approach of our combat behaviour in combat games.

First time I have had combat in ER, was like engaging in Freelancer. What works there, was a total failure in ER. I was dust in millisecs.
After that, I read the manual, the strategy guide and the forums. And it worked out. I´m not superior or elite or something like that, but I can handle the situation. In EL it is a little harder, but more rewarding, satisfying.

I also disagree about making combat easier, while it is hard, any easier would spoil the game, as ok some enemies are fairly easy, but in packs its a different story, I like the challenge (even though Im still learning and dying) I still like the difficulty of the game, if you want easy combat try freelaner or darkstar one, or even an X game, while a lot of games do have pretty easy combat, I found very few games that really are challenging because they are too easy, the X series is one such example, once you have an empire, the game is finished, combat was really an after thought in such games, of though there are scripts at least for X2 that made combat harder and more fun, so leave the difficuklty alone, hard as it is, its nice to be challenged :)

I'd also encourage any newer players who are interested in practicing combat one-on-one to join in multiplayer (maybe we can set up some more training flights). I will be happy to be a target for a new player learning the ropes of combat and I'm pretty sure you'll find others willing to do the same. Here is one of the most important concepts (from the strategy guide) to keep in mind when you engage a hostile spacecraft, including the easy ones in Olympus:

The biggest mistake most new pilots make is flying directly into a fight, guns blazing. This often results in a quick demise. Flying directly at an enemy ship makes you an extremely easy target and when you get hit by weapon fire, the impacts reduce your chance of successfully firing back. Instead, turn away from an inbound enemy so you place them near the corner of the screen, then turn off the IDS, turn to face the target, then fire when in range. ... The zero gravity drifting will make it more difficult for your opponent's weapon tracking system to follow your movement, making you a much harder target to hit.

That's obviously just one of the very basic principles, there are numerous tactical facets to combat in Evochron, but it's a critical concept to remain aware of when getting started.

I didn't ask for easier combat at all. I was wondering if there were any contracts vs 1 opponent instead of several. Or contracts vs wimps. ;)

;) The next version of this game should be called "Evochron Tangent" because, lately, everyone seems to going off on one ... including me.

Nah, you just opened a more detailed line of discussion :) No harm in that though, I think it's good to review details as was done in this thread.

No, there are no 1 ship contracts, however, as pointed out, you can sure pick on one hostile ship at a time for combat practice.

Since I am new, I guess I have not found the nukes yet...this makes the game a whole lot more interesting...I love nuking stuff. We here in the US should do a lot more of it.

I thought the fulcrum torpedos were the Nukes, of on a nother tangent again! Are there other Nukes besides fulcrum torpedos and proximity mines?
If so, maybe I should include these in my profitable fulcrum torpedo bussiness!LOL:P:P:P

My strategy was (after many deaths) to fly out to distant sectors and buy myself a decent hull and shields.

How to get out there when you have to cross hostile sectors?: go Intertial when you enter a jump gate and just sail pass all hostiles until you can jump to the next gate.. to a safer place.

When your sporting Shields 10 you have a bit more time to practice shooting at those reds.

I have yet to attempt a mission with conflict.. Im not a fighter really.. I just like exploring.
