New EL player questions and comments

Post by Spitfyre »

Hi there. Been playing for a week or so. Love that Excalibur missile pack!

Miscellaneous questions/comments...

I've just noticed I seem to be speed-limited to 3800, in "Inertial" mode. Once I've upped my speed in a direction to 3800, applying more thrust in that direction has no effect - except using up fuel. I was kind of expecting to use good ol' Newtonian style of crossing large distances - fire thrusters for a long time in the required direction to get up some serious velocity, then sit pretty while I fly along, then decel once I've got where I'm going. I take it this is intentional "soft edges" for the physics model?

I meet ships in deep(ish) space, out in the middle of nowhere. Is every ship "real" and a long-term fixture in the universe? Or are they spawned around you to add life, then unmade once their bit-part is over?

I hear talk of a Beacon Quest. Did I miss some vital initial clue in th game? Did I not do something I shoulda done? Or do all things come to those who wait?

I've got a Science Officer and Nav Officer living with me in that cramped little ship of mine. Glad it's only a game, or we'd be getting THEE SPACE MADNESS by now. They very occasionally pipe up and pretend to earn their massively inflated salary by telling me about containers "over that way". Great, thanks... but is there some way to prod them to give me a revised bearing/inclination every so often??? Right now, I have to wake them up by using my FD to hop over to the next sector, then hop back! I pay these jokers enough to give me more than an initial hint per sector jump, hehe. Any way to trigger another direction message?

Also, dumb mouse-waving user alert: "Exit" and "Save" buttons are adjacent in the main menu. I just whacked the former by accident (duh), and found there was no CANCEL selection. Escape key doesn't cancel either. All you can do is, er, Exit or Exit without Saving! Oops. :) Typical newbie discovery. I bet nobody does this once they know what they are doing...

Mainly for gameplay reasons, the in-game reason is given that even on inertial your frame is subject to 'vibration' different, and thus your speed is limited by the ship to maximium safe levels. engines can compensate for this effect to varying amounts....

Spawned and unmade, but not just to 'add life' these ships are going somewhere, and doing things, they will also have their own 'reputation' in regards to you. Also if they were all 'real' some pilots would find space very empty ( even now some miners find it quiet in the area around pices )
I hear talk of a Beacon Quest. Did I miss some vital initial clue in th game? Did I not do something I shoulda done? Or do all things come to those who wait?
easiest way, create a new profile, and go into the main game ( not training) you'll bump into the first beacon straight away ;)
Great, thanks... but is there some way to prod them to give me a revised bearing/inclination every so often??? Right now, I have to wake them up by using my FD to hop over to the next sector, then hop back!
yup thats pretty much it! back in the old days it wasn't so easy......

In regards to the thrust idea, there is an upper limit for anything. What Newtonian physics didn't initially say is that how fast an object can be pushed is limited by the size of the pusher and pushed. Even in space, an engine the size of a speed boat would have a negligible affect to a planet. If it were not so, then theoretically we could get a ship to go the speed of light.

So your engine, no matter how hard it burns, has a ceiling to what it can accomplish. I've looked at the caps in this game and given the engine size, those things must be amazingly powerful to get a cap anywhere. Of course, if the engines are THAT powerful, then fighters would probably push so hard the Gs would squish ya.

I agree that the crew should be doing much more for the amount they get paid, and when you do not pay them enough of an increment they leave you! practicaly doing nothing!LOL:P:P:P

So that raises the question: Are they worth the pay? I imagine that they might be when I'm making more than enough to swell my coffers and I have less need for technological advancement.

And hey, Bossk. Fun getting a-sploded in your presence. I'll have to get another ship and we do it again sometime.

Welcome there.

Personally, I have a Weapons Op and an Engineer. That's all I need, honestly. Science Ops just costs me money, and Navigators are simply annoying.

Ah well.

Hire the Science Ops and make him pay by decreasing the increments to -5000, so he owes you money. And if he does not want to pay you, well then he can leave!LOL:P:P:P

Just "leave"? I thought that's what the airlock door was for! Once you shove one ungrateful crewman out the airlock, the rest will tow the line! Count on it!:P

ROFL!! Nag, nag, nag, nag!
Again, I stand by my original suggestion!
It has a tendency to keep nagging to a minumum... "If you don't like the way I fly, there's the airlock door!"
