[EL] Feature Suggestion

Post by Swede »

I propose implementing volume into Legacy:
Each cargo slot would hold 250 kg of material making the max cargo capacity and the cost of a station, 2500 kg.
Prices would be reflected in kg, and cargo would be sold in kg.
Mining beams would come in levels. For example a Lvl 1 beam would collect between .4 and .6 kg of material per mining cycle, Lvl 2 would collect .8 - 1 kg and so on.

Implementing volume into legacys flight model would greatly expand the depth of its newtonian physics.
It only makes sense to assume that a ship loaded down with 2500kg of goods wouldn't handle quite as well as an empty ship. Since Legacy doesn't use the mass of a ship to calculate handling(does it?), a simple factor could be used to determine the handling effect.
What do you think? Should this be in the game?
Stay safe out there!

:o I'm still not totally up to speed on what to call the distance units. And, though cargo units could use something more Earth-like ('though the Sirians might object), I'd hate to see the asteroids go from percentages (one with 90% metal is the one I usually look to find) to something less definitive.

It wouldn't change the make up of the astrioids, sorry I wasn't very clear. Mining an astrioid with a lvl 1 mining beam would get you .4-.7 kg of material, or something like that. The product type it's self would be determined by the current means.
If that makes sense...

I edited and expanded my description of my idea. More fleshed out to alow people to better understand the concept.

You can largely set up a measurement change like that now by editing the text.dat file to change 'units' to 'kg' and related markers. You might want to give that a try and see what you think.

Yes, the game does already take mass into account when calculating agility/maneuverability physics of the ship, including loaded cargo. 'Unit' is simply used as a standardized measure for mass for cargo, much like how you'd want to use kg.

If you do, keep in mind that additions to the game sometimes require changes to the text file. Ergo, if you don't want to lose your customized text, it's probably a good idea to make a copy of it and keep it in a safe location whenever you update the game. Then compare your version to the latest version so you can make applicable additions to your modded text.
