autoaim... really?

Post by bullroar »

I was excited to try this game out until i watched some gameplay videos and realized that most of the combat involves those lock on beams.

The space sim I used to play was Jumpgate and seeing this I don't know if I even want to bother with this game, considering it doesn't have a major feature that a dogfighting game should have, which are skill-based weapons.:(

Can you convince me otherwise?

It is what it is. Either you like it or you don't. Kinda hard to convince someone to like something. But if you think there is no skill involved in hitting your target, you are wrong.

Try the demo and decide. If you want to just use your skill you have an option to "Disable" the MDTS which is the device that helps you target objects that are within the center circle of the Hud aiming receptacle. This disables it for YOU only, not the other players or AI:)

There is an auto aiming system called "MDTS".
As long as you keep the target in the center targeting circle beams weapons will always hit and reduce shields but they do
very little hull damage, cannons will hit most of the time, depending on speed and other factors.
You can turn off the MDTS if you want the extra challenge but you will want it on nearly all the time.

Surviving the enemies cannons and missiles is hard enough for it to be quite challenging.
Holding your target within the aiming circle can be harder than it looks.
Bear in mind the players on some videos are very good at not being hit by enemy cannon fire,
which will bump and knock you around enough to make aiming very difficult.

If it was any harder than it is already, my guess is it would put a lot of newplayers off.
Many who choose the combat pilot would simply "rage quit"

Try out the demo. (choose combat pilot start , if demo lets you)
There is a lot of skill to fighting and staying alive.

- an Option to disable MDTS for PvP duels might be interesting and that is something I have thought about to be honest.
Even so, with auto aim on, to be able to compete well in PvP you'll need a lot of skill.
Flying style and tactics, speeds, angles.. there is a lot to it really.

Hi bullroar - welcome to the game and forum

Its actually auto assist - there is still a large amount of skill needed to hit you opponent. As said above you can switch it off and for some types of combat it's actually better to do so. :)

There are complaints about combat being too hard in the game and virtually none about it being too easy! :D

Again, as above - get the demo and try combat out; you have nothing to lose and I'm confident you'll be impressed.

The Multi-Directional Targeting System (MDTS), is probably one of the greatest equipment assets available in the Evochron Universe. And, it's auto-magically there, in place with each ship frames' standard equipment, all the time! Both veteran and tyro derive great benefit from it's applications in combat scenarios. Whether sand-box, or meta-game, it definitely has it's own well-earned place. The true beauty and freedom of its many use options is that you can turn it off (except for the beam cannon controls) and be your very own Pistolero! ;):cool:

Note how it's nearly impossible to hit particles and beams at the same time without MDTS. Particles require you to lead your target, and beams require you to aim directly at your target.

Actually, the last time I checked, the MDTS no longer permanently applies to beam weapons. That kind of bothers me, because I see many scenarios where MDTS is totally ineffective and will hit nothing. I'd try to find a solution with it turned off, but without the beams still linked to the MDTS it's not worth it.

Also, the current aiming system gives and estimate (the little red circle that appears when in range) of where to lead your target for the most effective MDTS shot. That's all well and good but there's still a lot of approach angles using inertial drift that effectively render the particle cannons useless - MDTS or no.

My point is, that I see great value in the standard, auto deflection calculating gun sight that you would find on a modern fighter, as an addition to both the MDTS and non-MDTS mode(s). When your particles are travelling at a nearly 70 degree vertical/horizontal angle from your ship but you know you can still get hits in, eyeballing the shots to their target is extremely difficult.

Hmm.... I've never heard this term before. Not exactly sure where you're going with that, but if you can't translate it, I suggest you remove it.

I was not going any where with this, just making a play on words. Like Bullroar (the sound when a bull roars) and Chicken puc (the sound a chicken makes, puc puc puc!.....;)

Sinds a Rubber chicken does not make a puc puc sound it was not ment personally in any way!.....;)

OK, sorry bout that Maars. I never heard the sound a chicken makes as 'puc'.

I thought you were saying 'chicken pox' maybe or the alternative 'chicken s---' :o Which is not far from some players opinion of me.:D

Anyway no harm, no foul, no pun intended. :P

Let's all agree to return this thread to it's rightful owner and to it's proper subject. :)
