From post: 157442, Topic: tid=10507, author=DaveK wrote:One thing I noticed last time I did a system to system by fulcrum drive is that the calculation isn't straight line any more. For about 90% of the journey I stayed at Y=0 and then on the last 30ish jumps, the Y coord increased by 1 each jump until it reached the desired Y=27 - a straight flat flight until nearly there, then a 45 degree climb at the end.
 Yes, what you've observed is quite true. Which is why some "slop" has been added to the fuel readout, in "+/-" format ... as described in the instructions which accompany the computer. Originally, tests were run in a straight line, to determine the absolute minimum amount of fuel required. Those figures were then compared to trips taken to destinations above and below the galactic plane ... then slop was applied to compensate for the difference.

As a science teacher, Dave, it shouldn't take you long to figure out why the jump coordinates are plotted as they are (hint: sectors are rounded off such that anything less than half gets rounded down ... which would almost always happen when one side of the triangle is 1/100th of either of the other two sides). Once you do, you can add the description to your Guide ... and then H2GE can "borrow" it. (P.S. add a diagram or two.)

Ooc - i decided to check this on my way to sol, and test marvins computer(which works perfectly, thanks!) And i agree with DaveK - a 45 degree increase to the end.

Still confused about why - my forte is biology, not physics - but an interesting observation!

 It's math: trig, to be exact (a^2 + b^2 = c^2). If a is the ol' hypot of SX and SZ and is really long and b is SY and is really short ... and you round off to the nearest whole number ....

Ooc; Ah, pythagoras - now i get it, i was thinking of it as a vector equation... why is the resultant at such an odd angle/magnitude, but i get it now!

If the resultant of X and Z is 500 sectors and you want to go 20 sectors up/down on the Y axis,
you will get this:

- 500 sectors is 50 jumps.
- Y-axis is 20 sectors witch will give you 20/50=0.4 sectors / jump on the Y-axis (up/down).
- If the round off is down to the nearest whole number, the first 2 jumps will not change the Y-axis.
The 3rd jump (3 x 0.4 = 1.2) will change Y value with 1 sector up/down.

This is how it should do it anyway ;)

Take a look at the picture on page 1 of this topic. The distance is 715 sectors. Most of those are along the horizontal (X-Z axis). Perhaps 15 sectors are along the Y axis. If you have a Mantis drive, the 3-dimensional component is only going to be a 10-sector chunk of it. Which, at a ratio of 700:15 (thereabouts) gives an SY component too small to round up to anything above zero. But, as you approach your destination, that ratio gets smaller ... until you get to a point where the hoizontal component no longer overwhelms the vertical.

Thank you, SeeJay. You said it quicker and clearer.

Ooc; at which point the change in y-axis is shown. Right :) thanks guys! Great to see all of vice's ingenuity at work! If only there was a medical aspect :( lol

To answer why you get a steep climb/descent when close to the destination
is probably due to recalculation of the resultant before each jump.

That explains why the Y componant is small for a long time.;)

:o Burn cream? Doc, I was stabbed in the heart! I'm bleeding! (Besides, you don't put cream on a burn unless it's already blistered.)

A new heart? Pfft, please, wait 4 years and we might put you on a list.

You're good until then, right?

For help with Earth...

I have never actually attempted it, but I think you need a maximum skill navigator, and try to jump into the surface. The navigator should correct you, and all you have to do is hope you don't burn up on re-entry. It would explain talk of how you cannot land on Earth in a military ship, as they only have space for one crew member.

Just a hypothesis.

:o Normally, a navigator will redirect your jump to a point somewhere outside a planet's atmosphere. But it's certainly worth a try.

//BEGIN RECORDING////CURRENT POSITION; SX -1025, SY 0, SZ -5070//

Hey guys! I got a load of pictures today, I am so glad I got another photo-drone, so this'll mostly be pictures with captions. excited to keep exploring, might move to Vonarion sometime soon.

So, lets get on with it. Where did I put that coffee...

Oh no. Oh Stars no //CENSORED// Where is it! Where is the //CENSORED// COFFEE?

NO! //CENSORED// //CENSORED// //CENSORED//

NOOOOO! WHERE IS IT? WHERE ARE THEY?

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

A bit xenophobic, aren't they? I just wanted to say hello!

The rings of Saturn (OOC: excuse the chat box -.-" )

The inside of Saturn, right before I almost got crushed. Good times.

Pluto, before landing and finding a strange, deranged hermit living out of his terrain walker - poor man was nonsensical! I left him some food and backed away. Slowly.

Aforementioned freaky hermit... (OOC; Thanks Cargo :D )

Beautiful blue Neptune

Uranus. now, my reticule is hovering what what I can only describe - and my internal child giggles at this - the sphincter of Uranus. Yes, I know - its glorious.

OOC; Excuse the bad quality and reticule placing of most of these -.-" wish I could make them higher quality...

ah good times, I remember my last trip to Sol I decided to try landing on the day side of Mercury, only to discover that I was being kidnapped by the sun's gravitational pull. that was a good laugh until I realized my ship was about to discover what a star sized fusion generator does to it's hull.

Vonarion :) I saw ur offer of joint expedition and it so happens that I'm thinking about returning from Andromeda to build some stations to re map my way back here :) not that I need to... Andromeda, I don't want to leave but, I can go home and meet ya on my way back to Andromeda. So did you get back from sol?? I.....I didn't make it, sometimes lol, then I did xP but I died in sol soo many times :( it the safest system but I died more times there than anywhere O.o
I have a station in vonarion......if you leave before I get back, go see it xP I won't be far away from it ;)
