Newbie School \\ University of Evochron - Anyone wanting to learn welcome

Post by Sl1f3r »

Hi all,

So I've read a lot on the forums that some new players are having a lot of trouble with the combat, UI, navigation and a lot of other things in the Evochron universe.

I know there is a lot of players out there that help the new pilots, and some clans that help new members as well. But sometimes there are players that don't want to be part of a specific clan, or have timezone issues etc. so what I want to do is as follows:

To help new players out, I want to start a training school where I will teach those players that do not want to spend a few hours figuring stuff out themselves and just want to start getting into the game quickly the basics of trading, navigation, missions, combat etc. and also answer any questions. The idea is to get all interested members into the same system and on a voice chat like teamspeak or Ventrillo or something, give a short class at certain timeslots or have different classes at different timeslots (ie. Combat at 14:00, Mission running at 15:00, navigation and menus/ship functions at 10:00 etc), or let the class decide what they want to do, and then answer any questions, then do a little practical exercise for fun and send them on their way to go find their place in the universe.

Just to make it clear, I am by NO means the expert on this game, but I do know how to fight (ask [UE]Sinbad or [UE]Sariph or any other pilots that have flown with me) and I do know the basics of the navigation etc. and how to survive alone out in the dark. And i will be doing some research on the new stuff that came in with the expansion and to freshen up my knowledge.

So if you think this is a good idea, or a bad idea, or you are interested in this, please let me know.

Class Timeslots (please note that all times given will be GMT+2 - South African time - and subject to change to better accommodate players in different timezones)
  • Wednesdays from 18:00 - 23:00 (6pm - 11pm) - will be hosting multiple classes depending on the number of interested students
  • Fridays from 17:30 - 1:00 Sunday (5:30pm - 1AM) - will be hosting multiple classes depending on the number of interested students
  • Sundays from 13:00 - 22:00 (1pm - 10pm) - will be hosting multiple classes depending on the number of interested students
All classes will be presented in the Sapphire system on Starport6 server if the server is online, otherwise on Galactica1. (server might change according to availability)
Basic Combat lessons will start in Sapphire and then we will move into Olympus system for practical examples.

The above times are not the set time for classes, but the times I am available for the classes. The exact start times for the classes will be determined by the availability of the students of the day and will be posted at the latest 24h before the class

  • Ship Basics

    • Explanation of different ship modules (engines, cargo bays, wings, fuel bays etc.

    • Setting waypoints more accurately
    • Warping directly into stations and carriers

During the lesson and after the lesson there will be time for questions and discussions. (And a cup of anything at the closest Starbucks station, just don't drink and fly)

I will be giving the lessons over voice (preferably Teamspeak, but can use Ventrillo as well). You do not require a mic as i will answer questions posted in chat as well, you just need to be able to hear me.

Teamspeak details: ts93.light-speed.com:5781
no password
I will create a [UvE] University of Evochron channel when there is a lesson.

If you are interested in attending any class, please sate your in-game Callsign, Day and Time interested in attending/available and the modules(above) that you are interested in, also please state your timezone so that I can have an idea of which timeslots would be best suited.
The day before each lesson I will check interested students and the modules interested in and schedule class times accordingly. You are still welcome to join the day's class after the time has been set.

I hope I can help as many of you as possible to get into this great game and awesome community :)

Hi.

It's a great idea mate.

I have a "School" site that I started way back: http://www.junholt.se/evoschool/index.htm

Feel free to use any of the info of any of my sites if they can help you out.
Feel free to ask any questions as well if you need more assistance.

Good luck!

Yeah that actually helped me when i first started :)
The reason that i want to do the School in-game and on voice is so that I don't give information away that some people want to find out for themselves, and sometimes with the text-based schools while browsing you read something that you don't want to see, and I want to try and avoid that as far as possible by literally just giving the basics, doing a practical, and then letting the players decide what they want to learn from there.

Your help is greatly appreciated and I will be sure to mention you when giving the lessons (if any are interested in them that is).

Depending on how well this goes, I might require some other players to help me out to address Timezone difference issues.

Maybe if all goes well, I could get my School/University thread as a top post on the forums so all new players can see it when they enter the forums for the first time :) (one can only hope)

Finally got a chance to REALLY play this after the expansion, and I must say that the combat is a lot harder. I still survived in the warzones, but it takes considerably more effort now, and the Vonarii FINALLY learned how to shoot! it's amazing ---sniff, they grow up so fast--- :) loving it. Gona be fun teaching the newbies the new possible tactics and maneuvers, and I expect there's gona be a LOT of exploding rookies in the first few combat lessons. But that's why we are there (and the Quicksave button), to make the number explosions of your ships less, and the explosions of enemy ships more.

For every student that joins my classes, there's a free cup of anything at Starbucks station every Saturday! On me ;)

I think this is a really good idea. If you decide to proceed, I'll let people in-game know about the school. There is a huge influx of new pilots right now.

That would be much appreciated Zex.
I know there's a lot of new players because of the steam sale (as usual :) )
And it saddens me when people quit the game before they can realize how great this game actually is just because they just don't have the time to figure out how the game works because they don't have the time or whatever the reason, and now with the improved combat AI, it's going to happen more, so i would just like to help more players to experience the game by teaching them what little I know so they are better prepared to go out on their own and find their own adventures.

Hey there S@do! I've been out of the game for a while but got back in the pilot's seat yesterday for first time in ages. I'm a bit rusty... especially with all the new stuff in the expansion, but hoping to get back up to speed pretty soon and join you for some more adventures! Don't be surprised if you see me turn up for one of your rookie classes haha! Great idea by the way... a lot of new pilots will find that really helpful.

I would suggest putting together something that resembles a class schedule (including server, location, course subject, and times) so that those interested will know how to participate.
There are a ton of eager pilots out there with question after question. I spent a good chunk of time this weekend that I would normally spend on the war effort just helping some promising young pilots out.

HEY HEY MCCON!
It's been ages man :). I've been away from the game for far too long myself and also only started playing again yesterday, but I've been doing some experimentation and playing around so that i can teach the newbies some useful stuff AND I've luckily not lost my combat abilities. Even with the new AI i still kick Vonari but. Even though it does take considerably more effort than before, but I've noticed that even though they hit more now, they do way less damage than what they did before when they hit. You are always welcome on my wing old friend. I might pull you into one of the classes if the students want to learn about the basics of exploration. It's good to see a familiar face out in the black:)

Yeah I was planning on doing that, but wanted to check interest first. But if there's more people like you who could refer players to me, it might actually work.

I'm not quite sure on time though because of timezone issues, but I'm free most weekends so time then doesn't really matter.

I will edit the heading and add times etc. so that interested prospective students can start enlisting in the University of Evochron :)

Thanx Zed

Haha... yes with this new breed of Vonari I'd definitely feel safer with you on my wing out there S@do! Zex has a good point... I noticed there are more servers up these days, so a postboard/class schedule with time and locations would be useful.

Well. Im on long term sick leave at the moment so once ive walked the dog im available most afternoons and evenings uk time. I only started it yesterday so needing help on the nav map. I managed to upgrade my craft but left with very little assembly left so making money for new craft would be good. Whats out there? I have no real combat experience, shield and weapon management too! And generally joining with the community to explore further. I use a force feedback sidewinder joystick and mapped some of my controls but learning keys for everything is just something i need to learn i think. Probably more as i get into it more but really love the feeling of the game so far and any help would be greatly appreciated.

UK time is only an hour or 2 behind us if i'm not mistaken so that would not be a problem. I usually fly every afternoon from between around 7PM until around 11PM. If there are no-one else interested in joining tonight, I could meet up with you somewhere tonight and give you a quick rundown of everything you need to know to be able to navigate and start making some money :)

So if anyone one else is interested, Tonight at, let's say 8:30 PM GMT+2 in Saphire system on Starport6 (I will probably be online earlier), class on basic navigation and flying tips, Trade and non-combat missions. Depending on how the class goes, I will cover more topics according to requests of students in the class tonight.

I will give Teamspeak details here as soon as I manage to get a teamspeak server to actually work :)
