Post by Kubikukumonu »

Hello everybody. Im just learning this wonderful game. I can say its a handful alright. Ive played X3TC in the past and I mastered most things pretty well. Ive got control, barter and basic combat down pretty good, I think. After hours and hours of just floating in space with a "srsly whadda" expression on my face. The amount of hair pulling is pretty steep here. Mostly because of navigation mechanics/interface. I would expect things to made easier, since the "reward" of learning and doing in a harder than necessary way does not exist for me. This being said, I love the game. I completely understand it can't be perfect, especially with only one developer.

Anyway, my most pressing issue is with IMG contract: "protect the capital ship" which Im currently on. The problem is quite simple. I have no goddarn idea where to go. The last quest message gives a sector coordinate position, but thats just my current position, so maybe Im in the right sector? Cant seem to locate the ship anyway. There is no nav point to direct me, only the nav point I set to get to the city (that gave me the quest). I tried googling but all I came up was a 404 adress to username Mecingo's (who apparently does not exist anymore) tutorial videos in youtube. So any help on how to find the damn objective would be nice :)

Here is something else: accel/decel keys. Im using kb. So Im wondering why the IDS throttle keys cant be the same as when in inertia mode? Whats the whole point in having two sets there? The game does not allow binding them in same keys, but that would seem like the best way to me. Maybe Im overlooking something here though.

Navigation should DEFINITELY never, ever lose the objective navpoint, no matter what the player does. Except turning down or failing the quest, of course. The navigation also does not let you scroll any part of the quadrant you would want to. Why is that? Then the "text" function. It just makes an incredible mess of things. Each option (planet, station) should have its own button to disable/enable text. Then a function to never overlap the text is needed. It should add a "line" that leads to the object in question, and move the text. "Hiding" the bulk of the text items into minimized icons that open when moused over could also work well. Only display name or 4 letters (+ 1 or two digits) at all time.

Ill propably be adding my thoughts to appropriate threads later on, just felt like letting off a bit :)

 Vice is fixing the "text" problem in the Expansion. As for most of the other observations, they are due to your unfamiliarity with the game.

Hello Kubikukumonu, glad you are doing as well as you are at this point. The Sim can have a big learning curve so please give it some time. You can also jump onto MP play and others can help you with any difficulties you may have. Welcome to the forum and the Sim. Have fun and hope to see you in "Multi-Player" sometime. :)

What I have found works well is setting the S and W keys for accelerate/decelerate for control when drifting, and use the 234 keys for speed when IDS is on.

Inertial mode allows for individual control of your maneuvering thrusters. The main engine is not active in this mode (with the exception of afterburners). IDS employs both your manuevering thrusters and main engine. Using forward/reverse manuevering thrusters/afterburners in inertial mode will allow you to travel much faster than IDS mode.

Tthey are separate for the separate control modes (for example, different buttons on a controller can be used for each independent flight mode). It was setup that way a long time ago by player request IIRC (primarily from the Thrustmater and X45/X52 crowd). Binding to the same keys is a planned option for the upcoming expansion, allowing you to bind the same function to multiple keys. There is a way you can do this now, although it requires manually editing the configuration file. Details on that option are available here: http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtop ... #pid120399
Navigation should DEFINITELY never, ever lose the objective navpoint, no matter what the player does. Except turning down or failing the quest, of course.
If you are on an objective with a contract, it won't lose it unless you move it. And even then, your waypoint will still be highlighted on the nav map with a blue box.
The navigation also does not let you scroll any part of the quadrant you would want to. Why is that?
It's set up as a sensor based system with two separate map modes, requiring the player to travel to a location to retrieve certain local economic and object details in nav sensor mode.
Then the "text" function. It just makes an incredible mess of things.
You don't really need to use it, the mouseover highlighting is the suggested method. However, the text mode is being changed for the expansion.
"Hiding" the bulk of the text items into minimized icons that open when moused over could also work well. Only display name or 4 letters (+ 1 or two digits) at all time.
That is what the default 'Highlight' mode does and I'd suggest sticking with that for now. Just hold the mouse pointer over an object's icon to view its text details. Also remember that you can zoom in on other sectors within sensor range by right clicking inside the sector box.

 Although, it's always a good idea to check "Rear View" and, if the sector you want is above or below you on the Y axis, you first left-click on that sector and then go back to "Front View" to right-click ... thereby setting all 3 axiis and avoiding zooming in on an empty sector.
