Thanks, thetiebers. That link worked. I'll update my bookmark.
Aside from the Starwraith games, I enjoy Ad Astra, Independence War 2, Hardwar, X2, and Pioneer (which is still in alpha).
I think Hardwar is actually downloadable now. The company is out of business. I have the original jewelcase release. yay me! I was quite startled to discover such a cool game for a very cheap price at the time, with no advertizing or anything. I just saw it in a store and picked it up on a whim!
I think Ad Astra deserves a good play. It has a little learning curve (as most space sims do). Pioneer has some nice planets and physics models, but as it is still in Alpha phase, there is no much to do. However, if you enjoy flying around a vast universe and taking in scenery while you maybe do Fedex missions, it's pretty nice. No combat to speak of (it's there, but not much fun). Combat is infrequent enough, though.
When you think about the vastness of space, the idea of two ships being close enough to engage in combat is astounding.

I am not recommending it, but I am personally trying to play the glorious mess that is Battlecruiser Millenium Gold. It is free now, and NOT a good game so much, but the most complicated that I have ever seen, and thus has some appeal. If only in a what-could-have-been sort of way. The manual is immense.
edit to add that I just found out that this had a sequel, which I will try. Looks more fully realized. Then again, I hardly have enough time for EM now days, so maybe not.

A couple of options - bearing in mind that I have fairly limited space sim exposure. Freelancer, based primarily on the extensive modding community and the variety and beauty of the different regions of space to visit - I played back through that game so many times just sightseeing, and trying different total conversion mods. Nexus: The Jupiter Incident was fun if you're into strategy games (I suck at them, and didn't get very far into the campaign), and has a sweet 3D galaxy map. Miner Wars, as previously mentioned, has a fun pre-alpha out with a cool light sourcing engine, but is obviously only in pre-alpha. Infinity looks incredible, based on the tech demo videos. It looks like Evochron in many respects, though the graphics are better and supposedly everything is scaled 1:1. But yeah, it's not even close to being released, looks like.

Hello Dingo. I too have tried to play BCM Gold.
Are you aware that there are over 168 keyboard commands that need to be memorized/programmed including one for "swim"?
No one could possibly remember all those commands much less find the time to look for them on the keyboard.
Even the normal XY axis is not the same from one vehicle to another.
I spent hours trying to program the versatile Saitek X45 and even with the three modes, was unable to come up with a workable program that would allow me to fly the damn thing.
Best of luck!

I believe you completely. The manual is 97 pages in pdf, and the tutorial doc is the same size....and it seems like they aren't comprehensive enough! In one sense I want to play this, as its kind of a submarine sim in space with a bunch of cool-sounding features. In another sense I feel like it would require an entire semesters worth of flight school. From post: 115499, Topic: tid=7681, author=MMaggio wrote:Hello Dingo. I too have tried to play BCM Gold.

I'll probably tinker with it, then give it a pass
