If you could recommend only ONE space sim other than EM, what would it be, and why?

Orbiter 2010. Because it's realistic. You need a lot of patience to learn, but docking with the ISS is a great feeling, even if it's a simulation

Edit: I forgot to say that it's free ;)

I would have to say, "Terminus"! It is the closest game I ever found that compares to Mercenary. As old as it is, it still costs more than 2 Mercenary games.

You should add that it is awsome when you install the SCP Mods, back in the late 90's Freespace vanilla version was awsome, however now in 2011 it is a bit lacking in the graphics and effects department.

my vote has to go to X3: Terran Conflict. I've had alot of fun with it, though its incredibly complex.

if u r looking for free, then i suggest vega strike: http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/

Freespace 2, best space combat battles I've ever participated in reminiscent of Babylon 5 space battles. Nothing more intense than taking down those monster cap ships!

Definitely X3: Terran Conflict. Pretty awesome game, and you can download the admin mod they used for beta testing it. Gives you the ability to add a LOT of nice stuff, especially ships. The Hammerhead from Space: Above and Beyond was one of those, loved it.

It's funny: I really liked X2, but I didn't like X3. I haven't played TC, but I figure that it is like X3 but with different missions.

Essentially, they did two things to destroy the series (IMO).

1. They removed the cockpits.
2. They 'consoled' it, essentially ruining the keyboard shortcut structure. You can still map many keys, but the whole interface is screwed up and there is no easy way to get to many of the features that I used to just press a key for. Now I have to navigate some stupid GUI because that's how it works for consoles.

I'm inconsolable.

Anyone willing to mod the Hammerhead for EM? ;)

SAAB was another excellent scifi series euthanased before its time :(

X3 is pretty good game but the AI in it is lacking. Like, if you make an army of fitted ships and they run into really any trouble when you send them on patrol they just end up docking back up in a ship yard. Like I had a message a few times where some of the ships lost 5% and they are docking back up.

Besides that the only other problem that I have with it is how long it takes to travel. Like the small fighters can jump but the big ships that I like to fly like the carriers don't jump.
___________

Anyways, if you want a list of space games this is the best place I found to look for some http://spacesimcentral.com/ I have no idea if this list is a complete list of all the space games out there but it seems like it's close.

(sadly for me there is still not 1 that 100% fits my needs)

This might not qualify as a space sim but has anybody played Hardwar? Has the freeform sandbox play style like EM and Elite but you fly ships on a planet instead of space. Most memorable intro, terrific gameplay and replay value for its time. Davek, SAAB is one of my favorite scifi series too! was sad it got axed, I wish their was another show like that or galactica. Space operas always hard to sell to the masses. :(

Also frontier first encounters and OOlite, both games have improved graphics and OOlite has some great mods.

I had no idea that OOlite was out there. My old favorite Elite was.
thanks for the heads up :)

I also found out there is a cool Frontier First Encounters remake out there. A Russian-based re-working of FFE with great graphics.
FFE D3D

and one more for Elite fans.

"Pioneer" an open source space simulation game.
Pioneer is not really ready to play yet ,
but latest release Alpha 13 is looking great.

Jump Gate, most realistic that I played on and off for 10 years. Graphics are a bit dated but it's still fun.

EM is Jump Gate * 10. The only thing that concerns me is that EM has a limit of around 35 or so, at Jump Gates prime they had well over a 100 on line.

If EM takes off like eve (which is a joke as far as physics IMHO)would it scale? I suppose that's a question for Vice.

Below Jump Gate I found one called Vendetta, driving car as in space.

I like EM best, also it's free online.

Oh yea I tried Black Prophecy, not as realistic and has limited areas.
