Another new merc docking.

Post by superbatprime »

What's up fellow pilots, mercs, traders, brigands and everything in between.

Just finished playing my first session and I'm about to dive into the manual, watch a few tutroial vides, dodge all the spoilers and glean some infor so I thought I'd post my first post here at the same time.

I never used even a second of my demo time lol, after doing the tutorial sections and getting a feel (and seeing the stunning aesthetic style) for the game I couldn't get my credit card out fast enough.

I found my way here via SpaceSim Central which is a handy repository of space sim games (hence the name eh?).
I was looking for a game with a hard scifi edge, visually at least... Starwraith games has that visual style that makes my jaw drop (all packed into such a tiny download, how the? Is Vice a wizard?)

I knew I was going to play EM as soon as I first saw some cockpit screenshots, that complex HUD, all those lovely numbers, even the reflection on the canopy glass... quality, immersive and thoughtful design... Then I saw the planets, landing, space itself... omg, just perfectly in tune with what I wanted.

The design plus newtonian physics plus generally very positive word of mouth on this game sold me very quickly (and seeing the new features coming soon, I guess I signed up at a good time heh).

Anyway I'll pipe down now, I have a lot of reading to do, like any typical space sim fan half the fun for me is all the crazy stuff you have to learn.

It'll be a while before I'll try out multiplayer, I like to get my head around the game first, also I see some great looking mods (some of those HUDs are beautiful) to try...

...and I'm talking at full velocity again so I'll zip it now for sure lol.

Okay, cool, nice to be here, you all seem like a very cool community, Vice seems like a hella supportive dev (all his advice about freeing up memory for the game and stuff really helped me out).

No doubt I'll be bombarding you all with a bazillion questions soon enough.

Peace, love and laser beams.

Hi and welcome!

It truly is a great sim and the community rocks. Most friendly and helpful I have ever seen.
And yes, Vice is a wizard!!!

I recommend that you join MP right away. I did and I never looked back.
You'll learn much faster flying with other pilots and you can do contracts together as well. Much more fun!
And you can also get help if you run out of fuel LOL!

You will not get attacked on sight in MP unless you see a BA pilot. They want to welcome you with one kill!
Just kep moving in that case and ask for help. All oldies like to protect new pilots and kill a BA or 2 is a bonus LOL!
Normally pilots ask for PvP and respects if you don't want to.

Fire away with all your questions and we'll do our best to answer them.
If you need some hints, check out my EvoSchool site. No spoilers there.

Have fun and I hope I'll see ya out there!

Welcome superbatprime! Like SeeJay said, it truly is a spectacular game, and best of all, the community is the best I've been. It's good to have an enthusiast such as yourself on board!
I'd also recommend starting out with multiplayer right away. I was like you; played singleplayer for a long time before I joined multiplayer, but afterwards I should have joined much sooner if not right away. Mind you, you can actually play multiplayer as though it were singleplayer just by playing the game / following the Quest and not interact with others too much yet, but at the same time you can also benefit from the opportunity to ask them questions if you run into a problem. Trust me man, this will save you soooo much time.

Anyway, whatever you decide, have fun doing it and see you online sometime!

They're right, superbatprime. I just started myself and MP is the way to go. All the players I've run into in-game or on the forums have been really helpful and friendly. I didn't start playing MP until I ran out of gas and I definitely should've joined in sooner. Some of the quest missions are very tough, so joining up with a wingman or two really helps. Hope to see you in space soon!

Welcome aboard SuperBatPrime, to the game/sim and community! Yep, RTFM is a good acronym to keep in mind. Read The Furnished Material. There's a grunch of it out there!
Satisfy yourself in knowledge, then hop on to an MP platform. It's all down-hill from there....

Hope to see you out there sometime!

Okay I'm convinced, I'll give MP a shot sooner rather than later lol.

I have a couple of questions (more like confirmations really) regarding mods, first... folder structure.
I have created an environment and hud folder within the EM folder and am using some visual enhancments (stars and nebula).

Am I correct in thinking I can create a folder called mods in the EM folder and place those 2 inside that folder and the mods will keep working?

Second, say I just want certain elements from a hud or to customize just 1 or 2 elements, so I place just the files that I want into the hud folder, they will override those files from normal hud but the rest of the original game hud files will keep working fine?

For example, I just want to add a new sans-titre---1 to the regular hud, so just put that file into the otherwise empty hud folder and it will add it to my normal hud?

I hope that made sense. :D

The only part I can help you with is the "Mods" folder you mention. There is none by that name. You can have a "Ships" "Hud" and "Environment" folders and as far as I know that is the only ones that work. I could be wrong and if so others will correct me soon.:D

No, if you do that the game won't pick up on the mods you're using. You need to place the files for the mod in the appropriate folders, as indicated in the readme file from the CustomKit.
Second, say I just want certain elements from a hud or to customize just 1 or 2 elements, so I place just the files that I want into the hud folder, they will override those files from normal hud but the rest of the original game hud files will keep working fine?

Correct, you can do just that.

I may be mistaken, but I think the image you're referring to (a very detailed blue control panel) only appears in Maximilien's blue cockpit mod, so only the custom ccpit.x file refers to it. If you're using that excellent mod, then replacing that file in the [Evochron Mercenary install folder]/HUD folder should work. If you're using EM's standard cockpit, or another custom cockpit, the new image won't appear in-game.

*smacks self upside the head*
Of course, shoulda checked the customkit, thanks Viper, sometimes I derp a little.
I see it lists all the folder names I need for mods and has already answered most of my potential modding questions, nice one.

Well my hud is now working as desired, my stars and nebula are looking amazing and I'm rocking some ENB bloom and reflections.

I'll leave it at that for customization for the time being and get on with playing.
I'm all out of questions atm, or to be honest, every question I think of is being answered in a video or guide so I guess that's it for now. :)

Thank's for the welcome guys and Minuteman I may take you up on that offer of a wingman soon.

 If you use JSGME, you'll probably want a MODS folder.

Yep correct on all counts. Learned that the hard way, I needed all 3, lights, reflections and ccpit to make the game build the cockpit.

I was doing it backwards in my haste to get a cool looking console >.<

So I installed the full mod (which is stunning) and am editing and replacing elements from it one at a time rather than trying to build from an empty folder, I can see what unique files the mod uses and edit those to my liking instead of trying to (incorrectly) stuff them hamfisted into the game lol.

Next is a new metal texture.

Also... the Navy do not take kindly to being shot at. :/

Ah, that's where I saw that!

Going to pick that up, it looks like a useful tool.
