Mercenary is my 1st Evochron - Am I missing anything if I haven't played the others?

I recently purchased Evochron Mercenary and just now realized this is merely the latest installment in a series of games.

Contextually, would it be worth it to go back and play the original games first, or is Mercenary merely an evolutionary update in graphics/gameplay from the earlier games?

There's no story in the game, so you won't lose anything if you start out with mercenary. Like you said, it's just an evolution of gameplay and graphics.

The game which came just prior to Mercenary is Legends. Before that was Renegades. Both of them had their own quest ... which followed a story line. In Legends, you could do both its own quest and the earlier, Renegades, quest. Together, they told a story not available in Mercenary.

But the story isn't needed to play mercenary.
Also, I guess the story wasn't really the whole point of the game, if I'm not mistaken (I never played them)

Somewhere in that thread should be a link to the un-light version of Mercenary's backstory. You can also learn a bit from watching the Intro movies to each game (most Starwraith games can be downloaded as a demo ... so you can then watch the Intro to each one ... for free).

I played 4 of the games. Renegades, Legends, Mercenary and Arvoch Aliance. Arvoch Aliance is more a combat mission based simulation no free travel from system to system!
Renegades, Legends and Mercenary are more of a sequel each can be indepedently played. If you would like to play one of the previous games I would recommend Legends, Since Legends has both quests, its own and the quest from Renegades!......

Yeah, I purdy much felt the same way, when I first popped above the radar minimums...a few years ago...
Ye've not missed much, starting with Mercs; as it's basically a universal compendium of all the other iterations of the Evo-verse. In one uniquely presented package. Vice does games good! However, if'n you've a mind to, do read the fan-fic, as well as that which Vice either created himself or sponsored. Some really useful stuff may be found there, if'n you're at all interested in the background/history/growth of this Evo-verse we fly. Safe skies and happy landings!
