AC went out in Texas

Post by EN4CER »

It got up to 106 degrees yesterday. After helping a friend of mine move some things I come home and hear the condensing unit making an awful noise. The fan isn't spinning... great. So I do what any homeowner does in such a situation and I give it a good solid kick. Voila! The fan starts spinning. I know it solves nothing so I inside and hit Google before ambient temps get too high to run a PC.

Google tells me that I know nothing of HVAC system but that it's very simple. Thanks Google you're always right. Well except that one time but that's for another story.

The fan motor ends up going out in the next 15 minutes. I'm not surprised in the least. I then kill the power and get as far as I can without tools and equipment. This is where it gets fun. The repairman comes out and informs me that the call is 75$, the motor is 500$, and that the capacitor is 200$... the house may be too hot for Google-fu but my phone certainly isn't.

So in front of the guy I Google the parts and ask if misplaced his decimal point in his part quote. Nope, that's what they cost. I told him that people must not think clearly once their homes get too hot and paid the man for his time.

I went to AEM and got both parts for 100$ and had the manager put it all together in the shroud while we talked.
