Joystick Config

I'm evaluating this game (looks good so far). I wish to configure the joystick so that the x axis performs turn and roll. ideally it would turn unless a joystick button is pressed then it would roll. Is this possible?

Unfortunately, I don't think it is. There may be some sort of third party software out there that could make it possible... but that is only speculation. Good luck though! :)

I suppose it would depend on your stick. I use a Saitek X52 Pro and the software lets me programme all the buttons, hats, sliders and knobs to do lots of things - there is also a shift key. It also has 3 modes do that each bit can have three things assigned to it.

I must admit I only use one mode and I use the EM in-game option to programme them for what I want :)

Does your stick come with programming software?

I want to use my old flight yoke. Perfect for this type of game. No programmable buttons or software though.
To me this requirement is rudimental. I'm surprised it's missing. How else do you control roll pitch and yaw with a 2 axis joy or yoke?

What control did you use for rudder when flying with that old yoke?

I would use the x-axis for turning(rudder) cause you do not really need to roll in Space to turn in one direction and I would asign the roll function to rudder pedals or use the Keyboard keys for roll when you need to roll!.....;)

:o That would probably be a fighter pilot's worst nightmare ... not being able to roll so as to put the target on your canopy's lift vector.

Yep, in atmospheric combat that would be true!, In Space you just need pitch and yaw to keep your enemy in gunsight!..;)

I did have pedals a long time ago, but I have used the keyboard for rudder in flight sims.
It's not that big a problem in a flight sim to use the keyboard, but in space where there is no up or down you need seamless control of all 3 axis.

This isn't going to stop me playing the game, I mention it here because it seemed so rudiment. I have played may space sims and as far as I'm aware this ability has always been available (I think).

 Well, IIRC, the original Elite had only roll and pitch. Personally, I hardly ever use yaw ... maybe I would if there was a need to "kick the rudder" to line up with a runway. But, in this game, it's not a requirement.

Yes, I remember Elite had only roll and pitch, and it was a bit odd getting used to without yaw, specialy when trying to shoot the aliens on your 3 o'clock, 6 or 9....LOL...was fun though.....;):P:cool:
