I can't seem to find a specific answer on this just browsing around. After getting the build constructor, I decided to mess around and build a research station in Aquila, near the jump gate. This bumped up the station docking fee by nearly 50%, as well as increasing the build fees for any subsequent stations. I also stuck an ore station and an energy station out there, but neither had the same effect.
Do the energy/navy factions not like research stations, or is it that the other three are made happy by them (and thus by definition it offends the first two)?

research stations increase the economy of the system you build them in - resulting in better (ie higher) prices in the system. Build a trade station and you will automatically get a license for it - you won't have to pay fees.
Spoiler below:
lose the license! (yep really) - you get 25% off what you buy but also 25% off what you sell!
build a station say 10 sectors away and you should find that they have cheaper prices plus the 25% discount you get as a license holder - buy stuff here - jump to your other station and sell it Choose a fairly safe uncharted system and you can t5rade in peace Find a system with some containers and you can raid them each time you load the game and sell then at a total profit!
