Help! How do I raise my guild reputation?

Okay, so after flying around a bit and visiting several systems I've managed to make a fair amount of money (about 10 million left over, after upgrades to a Mammoth with a class 14 cannon and an Excalibur pack) but in the process of getting there, I've gone through some systems where Guild ships are red to me.

I've shot a few of them down before fleeing the massive hordes that jump in every time after I kill the first ship and now it's kind of difficult to go much of anywhere outside of Sapphire without getting mobbed and turned into that stuff that the other newbies are cleaning off of solar panels.

Is it possible, as a civilian, to get back to yellow or green with these guys?

Why were some of them red to begin with even though I'd completed the first guild quest?

Is there some way to get another guild quest that's not the "singleplayer only" racing quest?

Sorry if this is a n00b question but I've been specifically trying to avoid reading spoiler info and would instead prefer some hints from you guys on what to do next.

Also - is there a decent FAQ on system reputation somewhere that's spoiler-free?

Odd as it might seem, Guilds are one of two bad guys (the other one being Rebles). Nonetheless, you can eventually get on their good side by taking Navy, Miner and Energy contracts. How long it takes depends on the global reputation of the local star system ... a "Good" star system will have everyone on friendly terms. A "Hostile" system will be about the opposite.

Confusing, isn't it? Game-wise, we are all pilots of the Mercenary Guild ... in competition with every other guild. Sometimes the competition gets heated and sometimes it's a bit more friendly. It depends on the star system and your reputation.
