One of the best space combat sims ever made, with inertial combat, I was wondering if you can run this game on windows 7, they have this for sale on GOG and it runs as far as windows vista tops. Has anyone downloaded and played this on win 7?

Hi there,

IWar is wonderful.

There are a few issues, which may have work arounds but you will have to search for them.

The game was designed for a 1996 P-3 / 250 ish processor and has problems with anything that will run it faster.
I remember seeing somewhere some kind of processor slower downer for modern machines so one could run IWar. Try searching for this.

There may also be issues with modern graphics cards.
I also remember a thread comment from the old Iwar forum that running the game in window mode and software mode as opposed to using the graphics card was about the only way to get it to work with newer hardware in many cases. The graphics are much reduced but at least it runs.

Experiment!

Search!

Good Luck!

Sundalo, GOG tend to do the legwork for you on performance/compatibility issues. If their game is DOS-era it will come packaged inside a DOSBox emulator that should run just fine without compatibility modes or jiggery-pokery. I've bought a few old games from them (Sanitarium, Wing Commander 1 and 2 etc.) They've all come bundled like that. I would be VERY surprised if they haven't done the same thing here.

IW2 (which GOG also sell) works on Windows 7; when I asked GOG whether IW would as well, I got a terse email back saying look at the advert page! Not ever so helpful :(

From what I remember, IW required a certain gaphics card to work properly.

So, just to confirm xander1987, you've got IW to work in W7 as well as IW2?

I really do hope so! :D

Yes,

Iwar was developed around the Voodoo graphics cards and the cream of the crop was the V-5500.

I was sorry to see the changes in Edge of Chaos. It lost something.

I tried the second one many years ago but it was already a bunch of years old and i couldn't get into it. If nothing else, someone should remake them (a bit like WC: Privateer was remade, though this one was more in need of it since it wasn't real 3-d then)

Never played the first one but I recall that someone in a store was demonstrating it and it looked like some deep but complex capital ship simulator to master. Then I played the second one 's demo a few years ago and liked its newtonian physics and combat but I wasn't so much into games at the time and didn't buy it.
