K so I was trying to do some advanced mercenary contracts. Fighting 8 ships or more. Seems to many for one ship.
I assume I need to build a fleet to even the numbers?
Where can I find fleets ships?

Your "Fleet" is just a special word for friendly AI ships that you hire through the trade console.
Any green labelled ship should accept a trade request from you when you are within 1000 of them. Then just press the Join Fleet button in the trade window if you can afford their services and they will fly with you for the rest of the game session. They don't remain if you load a new saved game.
As for where to find them. Find a station with a lot of friendly ships flying around. Just be wary that hiring them from Sapphire generally means they are flying weaker ships than if you hired them somewhere like Pearl or a Warzone.
Don't forget to actually order them around with the orders menu at the top of your HUD otherwise they just fly close to you. I tend to use "defend me" order as it makes them fly close and kill anyone nearby.

If you use a fleet, I suggest you assign some keys to the fleet commands (I use the unused keys on the numpad for this) instead of using the buttons on top of the HUD. If you can assign them to controller buttons that is even better.
If you play multiplayer, most of the time you can find a group of players to do missions with, and that sure beats any fleet you might have (in fact you can not have a fleet of AI in multiplayer).
As far as the need for a fleet I find it is better to just accept easier missions when I play alone. It is better to be successful in 3 out of 4 one waypoint missions than to fail a mission on the 4th waypoint even if the challenge is not as great. If the easiest missions are still too hard a fleet will help lower the difficulty into something you can manage as your skill grows. With some practice fighting 8 AI ships alone will only be mildly difficult.
If you are going to take military missions I suggest you take them in a war zone:
Talison conflict is usually know as the easiest war zone
You will get credit for your military rank
The enemy will not send in as many reinforcements (if any)
You will have more non fleet AI helping you

yeh i finally figured it out. Multiplayer for w/e reason has fleets disabled.
Single player when trading, the option to fleet with another ship comes up.

So what about if you're fleet destroys the last ship for you in the mission and the mission can't be completed. There's no more enemy ships in the area around the nav point. That just happened to me right now, and I'm almost positive it's happened before.

Might have been an Ace mission and the Ace escaped before you could kill him. Or you where at the border percentages for a reputation change to happen. It happened to me lots of times in this scenario in single play trying to change my reputation in a system!.....You can deploy a sensor station to look for any remaining hostiles and ussualy killing a certain amount of more hostiles when you find them will complete the mission!.....From post: 129686, Topic: tid=8708, author=The_decaff wrote:So what about if you're fleet destroys the last ship for you in the mission and the mission can't be completed. I had this happen twice just tonight. The first time, I waited around long enough for a couple more Rebel ships to warp in, and I destroyed those. The second time, a low threat Rebel ship appeared (which is odd since I was in Fauston working for the Navy fighting rebels), and I just attacked this ship. It went red of course, and when I destroyed it, the mission was ended successfully. From post: 129686, Topic: tid=8708, author=The_decaff wrote:So what about if you're fleet destroys the last ship for you in the mission and the mission can't be completed. Evidently, this only happens if your wingman destroys the very last ship. 'Cause I've had wingmen take out one or more, leaving me what's left ... to finish the contract.
