2D, 3D, ports and RDP

Post by Brady »

Hi all,

I'm trying to get a wee private server running, but am having a few problems.

Router is enabled for both ports.
Firewall is OFF for this test on clients and server.

When I RDP into the server and start the 3D server program, everyone can connect and run the game. BUT...if I close RDP the program terminates.

If I use the 2D program it doesn't terminate on close, but no-one can connect (LAN or WAN).

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Server is running Windows Server 2008,
Hardware is not a problem....

2D, 3D, ports and RDP

Hi Brady - I have a very similar situation.

Running Windows 2008 R2 with the most recent updates from MS.

When I run the game in 2d mode - the game will not host. Clicking "Connect" results in the message "Error, Unable to list Game". Do you have the same issue?

The Windows Firewall is off, and other applications such as: Minecraft and Terraria dedicated servers host their games without issue.

As far as running the 3D app in an RDP/VNC I think is going to get us a "working by design" response. The manual says to disable all screensavers and make sure the monitor does not turn off. The 3d server app needs the screen to be active - that seems pretty clear.

If I run the 3d app in a VNC window, and then close the VNC client. The next time I log in I get the following error.
Runtime Error 7008 - Object does not exist at line 1114. Object Number Not Found:50
This indicates a DLL failing to initialize (I am guessing something in 3d because it seems to run fine until the RDP/VNC window closes).

Running the Server on an Lenovo T61 laptop running Windows 7 results in the same behavior when I close the lid of the laptop.

In Summary

I really want to play this game with my friends - and I can do so by hosting on the laptop for now (as long as I leave the lid open and all screensavers off). My 2008 media server does not have a monitor attached. This is inconvenient but not a problem for the short term. The issue is that if people want to start hosting this on real game servers their going to need an app that behaves much more like a standalone server.

Please put some development time into the 2d version of the server. In all honesty the 2d version isn't even necessary. Give us a command-line only server and I think you would solve these issues a lot more simply :).

Thank you for the game and the continuing support!

2D, 3D, ports and RDP

For those running into problems with the 2D version of the program, please try temporarily setting the CPU affinity to one core, then test for changes. Please verify that your port settings are correct to make sure any connection problems are just configuration related.

Also, I have put together a revised build of the 2D program that supports a number of custom display, font, and rendering mode options. One or more of which may help the program to render/perform as needed on your system. The updated version can be download here:

http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmerce ... rver2D.zip

Extract the files and replace the old EXE file with the one in the zip file. Also make sure to include the screenmode.txt file in the same folder, which is a new addition. Now to test the different options, here is what each line in this file represents:

Line 1 = Screen Width Resolution (1024 recommended)
Line 2 = Screen Height Resolution (768 recommended)
Line 3 = Color Depth Setting (16 recommended)
Line 4 = Screen Mode Settings (1 = windowed/preferred, 2 = full screen)
Line 5 = Font Name (lets you select a different font that is present on your system)
Line 6 = Font Size (14-18 generally good for many fonts)
Line 7 = Font Rendering Format (-1 for True Type, 2 for Bitmap, 3 for FX Bitmap, 8 = Compressed Raster Font)

In particular, try a value of 8 in line 7.

So with these options, see if you can apply settings that will work on your system, then please let me know what they are. Hopefully, this will lead to a solution and I can integrate it into the next update for the program.
