Freelancer Player query

Post by J-Boy85 »

Hey everyone, just signed up and currently downloading the demo I am very intrigued by Mercenaries and just looking to get some details about the multiplayer experience and Evochron game in general

I'm an old freelancer player and still play it very regualrly with the modding community. Currently I'm in a heavily RP server with factions and mods to allow capital ships traders miners etc (sounds like we've been modding away to do what Mercenaries has gone and done already!) My question is how extensive is the RP element in the game, are there RP only servers , and are there any mod groups out there with servers that look to create that feel with different ship designs and such?

Second question is I was never the best combat pilot (hence why I latched onto a game that i CAN shoot stuff but can also mine my way to a pile of gold :P ) and Freelancer was a mouse/keyboard setup. In your honest oppinion is a joystick better for a feel of the ship and the game or will I get as immersive an experience with keyboard and mouse?

Final thoughts I browsed and saw a few other old freelancer players what does Mercenaries do different or what aspects that i may recognise have been utilised or improved in Mercenaries? How big is the skill/gold gap, will some guy in a billion gold fighter blast me away every day i don't pay tolls or can a scout with only modest cash and plenty of skill take on the heavies?

Any thoughts welcome and here's hoping the game is as good as the hype!

 A joystick is a must for some of us. Either way, though, it won't take you long to get the best ship (depending on preference). After that, survival is a skill.

Hi J-Boy85, Welcome to the forum and hopefully the Sim. I play with and without a stick. A stick works great for combat with another human pilot but in not an absolute. Have fun and hope to see you in Multi-Player sometime.:)

I played Star Wars Tie-Fighter to death on hard difficulty years ago using a joystick/throttle/pedals combination so I got proficient using them. Keyboard and mouse feel "wrong" for a game such as this (or any flight style sim other than Freelancer), but there are players that use just that: keyboard and mouse and have no problems in combat. Really it will be up to your playstyle on how you want to play. A word of advice with the demo, you can go through the training missions as many times as you want to get a feel for the game as the "demo" mode has a time limit.

Evochron Mercenary has a very high ship customization from ships that are very fast or heavily armored to fit any playstyle, and really, it is relatively simple to gain wealth, once you know which routes to go and where to mine.

Welcome to the game :)

Hi J-Boy85. I'm an old freelancer player but I never ventured into multiplay and modding in freelancer!
Welcome to the forum and hopefully the game. The freedom and open feel of Space is better in Mercenary and the newtonian style physics are some of the differences. The other is you have real planet desents. There are some awesome mods and the modding comunity is not that big yet! You can prety much do whatever you want to do Trade, Fight , Bribe, Explore, Mine, Build, do contracts and missions have races organize events, competitions, chalanges......etc....etc....;)

Hi and welcome.

I also played Freelancer before. (In SP only).

EM is so much better both visually and physics involved.
It's an open sandbox game where you do whatever you want and don't have to follow
any quest to gain rank. There is one quest to teach you the basics,
but you don't have to do it. (I recommend all players to do it).

The ship control is excellent and I prefere using my X52 stick/throttle. Several great pilots use mouse/keyboard.

The support from the creator Vice is the best I've ever seen and all people in the
forum is very helpful and friendly.

Online you will not be killed all the time. Most people ask for PvP and respect if you don't want to PvP.
They are also most willing to help out and train you in whatever things you need to improve/learn.
Many pilots will rush in and defend you if you encounter any of the few that might attack you.

Hope to see you online!;)

You know, I have ONE beef with the training quest, a friend and mine are on the one where you have to defend the transport and while our quests are saying estimated 3/4 ships to kill when we get there we get swarmed by 5/6 from the get go, we can take out a few but by then we've taken too much damage and get destroyed failing the quest for us. Everything else before that was just fine but this is, blargle wtf mode.

Try hiring a fleet to help you out or do it in multiplay and ask for assistance from other players!...;)
