This is my reaction when I read about the legend at school
Krampus is a legend recognized in Alpine countries. Krampus comes with Santa Claus during the Christmas season. When the Krampus finds kids who have done naughty deeds such as stealing a piece of candy or breaking curfew, it stuffs the them in its sack and carries the horrified kids away to its home, where it then eats them.
Other versions of the legend say it tares the kids limb from limb and to hit them in the sack, and it also whips them repeatedly, not with a normal whip, but with the kind that rips the upper most skin and some deep flesh.
What I have to think of this is the fact it should NEVER BE TOLD TO CHILDREN! What kind of sicko makes up a story about a creature that will whip you, tare you limb from limb, and stuff you in it's sack to eat your remains for later. Seriously this can cause mental trauma to some poor child, and cause more then just nightmares. Don't get me wrong I can respect people that have a thing for messed up twisted stories and even freaks that visit shock sites, but the children, seriously?
LOL.....in Holland we have Sinterklaas, who has helpers that are called Zwarte Piet(Black Peter) and when you have been very, very naugthy as a child Zwarte Piet will take you in his Sack full of black sooth to Spain and make you a Zwarte Piet......:P:P:P:P:P:P:P:P:P

Not much different than the Pied Piper or parents telling you to go to sleep NOW or the gremlins under the bed will know you are awake and get you!
Just a bit OTT with the punishment bit for snaffling candy - nowadays kids would be told it'll make their teeth fall out (which at least has an element of veracity!)

not so much different from old fairytale stories where cannibalism etc is quite common, like a witch in a gingerbread house who fattens kids so they'll taste better etc. Or lil' red ridinghood with the wolf eating the granny & slaughtering of said wolf. I also somewhat remember a story where mischievous little boys were ground to bits in a mill for punishment and then fed to crows or something.
It's basically just to scare the children to behave well. To extrapolate, it still happens. "obey this ruleset or suffer eternal damantion in fires of hell" etc. (No, I don't wish to debate of religion, I was just using it as an example).

The "Grimms Faery Tales" much like many nursery rhymes and the Warner Bros. cartoons
of the 1930's - 40's were originally intended for adults. As standards of what was too risque for children to see or hear about loosened for the respective eras in which these stories were made, they became known as "Children's Stories"
Nowadays many kids grow up with stories of GTA or similar games as their "Faery Tales".
There are a few hard to find WB cartoons in which Bugs Bunny is portrayed in "Black Face". White actors would use grease paint make-up to make their faces black to portray characters in vaudville/plays in places where "colored" actors were not allowed.
Just a little not-so-fun fact for ya.

Hey, are you from Holland as well mate? Never realized that, your 'location' below your avy says 'USA' lol.
And yeah don't mess with Zwarte Piet. I've been in that bag of his and seen the nasty end of his rod (or whatever that's called in English) and I tell you, it's not pretty.
