Object Draw Distance

Post by Goffik »

Greetings all,

Is there somewhere I can modify the draw distance of objects? Small ships are fine as is, but some of the larger objects like capital ships and asteroids tend to 'pop in'. I'm sure my rig can handle them appearing much farther away than they currently do and I'd like the increased immersion.

Cheers.

I think some object you can but I think it is just changing the scale of certain objects like Astroids and Ships and not the draw distance. Atually draw distance is the scale.....;):P:cool:

Check the Customizing kit!......;)

Draw distance isn't anything to do with the size and scale of an object, it is the distance at which the object becomes visible to the player. In many games there is an option in the graphics menu allowing the player to adjust the distance, but EM has no such option. I was hoping that there was a config file somewhere that I could manually edit instead, but I haven't found one yet.

I did check the customisation kit but there is no mention of draw distance in the readme.

Draw-distance definitely appears to be determined by the game and not user-definable. I am not sure if objects are drawn based on available resources or a pre-determined distance. I have never noticed "popping" on my system, though. Is the effect really noticeable? (probably yes because you made a new thread about it, but humor me)

Does the draw distance seem to change when different detail levels are selected in the options screen?

I've never noticed the 'popping in view' either. Al seems to go pretty fluently to me (and I certainly don't have the best vid card out there). I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the settings or the capacity of your graphics card.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's really noticeable. It's just on a number of occasions I've seen capital ships suddenly pop up which didn't appear to be jumping, and when flying towards an asteroid field from far out the larger `roids popped into view.

All graphics settings are at max at the moment, so if the draw distance does change then it should already be as high as possible (I'll check them again anyway though).

As for my card, I have a Radeon 4870 which I'm certain isn't being strained by EM.

It's not a major issue really, but I just thought I'd ask. I quite like fiddling with files and tweaking bits and bobs to get things just as I want them. (Using a snazzy HUD I found here at the mo.) I can understand why a lot of EM is hard-coded though, given the multiplayer element.
