I love this stuff. it always impresses me, and I cant get enough, though it saddens me. why?

truth is that in our lifetimes, we are not likely to ever visit any of those places, let alone have people on multiple planets in our own solar system.

I think "dark matter" and "dark energy" are not dark in the physical sense, but represent dark areas of our understanding.

Very likely, what they represent are physical "laws" that we need to update for accuracy.

We are the breeders of the future space pioneers, if we raise are children right in science and common sense they might be the first generation to reach Mars, if not, their children. It might happen, only we can build the way for future space travel.

Dark Matter is responsible for the expansion of the Universe, pushing galaxies farther and farther away from each other, very little is know about dark matter, we don't even really know what it is.

Scientists discovered that there wasn't enough matter in the universe to account for the Big Bang (or anything close to it) ... so they invented dark matter. Something that's invisible. Kind'a like Ether ... except not already discounted as a figment of somebody's imagination. Yet.

it's why NASA (who haven't got much of a sense of humour) changed the pronunciation to your-an-uss

Physicists have moved from using maths as a tool to using maths as a description - when there isn't enough matter to stop galaxies flying apart as they spin they calculate the missing mass and call it dark matter (because we can't "see" it) when they measured the rate of expansion of the Universe to see it it will continue to expand, though ever more slowly or the rate will slow to a stop and then reverse with the Universe shrinking they found that the rate of expansion is increasing - so they plug the numbers into the equations and add the fudge factor called dark energy which causes gravity to become repulsive over Universe sized distances. It's similar for the standard model of particles - when new data comes in, use the maths to create new particles to make the model balance again

I agree with Marvin - in the past it was the ether and in cosmology the creation of epicycles of ever increasing complexity to keep orbits circular despite the retrograde motion being observed amongst more and more planets.

Somehow we've reached a stage where our present standard models (for particles and the big bang) are taken as correct and no one blinks at the the fudge factors to maintain them - no sign of supersymmetry or the Higgs Boson from LHC - but what the heck, we can "create a few new particles classes, new energies and new types of matter to "balance" the equations.

Personally I favour string theory as a broad brush explantaion of reality and quantum loop gravity theory as a better description (especially since they can integrate relatavistic and quantum gravity so neatly) - and they have the advantage that it is very very very very difficult to design experimental tests for it

I've never seen anyone explain why strings vibrate. Or conjecture that the visible universe is surrounded by something far more massive that sits way out beyond even our best telescopes. Not dark matter ... just far-away matter. Lots.
