First let me discribe page fileing, windows uses physical space on your hard drive to store a number of files uses to enhanced ram management. Many understand it as things in the background are 'filed' and foreground aps are 'rammed' or in ram memory. However certain applications while in foreground still 'file' certain things not often accessed. I believe movie sequences like the jump and super jump are prime examples IMHO.
Now then you'll need one of the following...
USB 2.x port and a USB 'thumb drive' 8MB+ for best results
or
SD micro drive port, and an SD card (8mb+) for best results
These devices are solid state 'drives' meaning there are no moving parts. It also means for windoes 7 to access them requires no more time then it takes to access sys ram.
(see where Im going with this?)
Windows defualts to page fileing to the harddrive, which has a limited speed (each drive varies 6,000rpm to 10,ooorpm and higher. Still takes time to spin up the drive, read/write. USB 'thumbdrives' and SD micro cards are flash drives, a name well deserved. So no matter how fast or how much sys ram you have your system will slow down to access the drive during pagefiling. You may see stutters, and jumps in game because the processor(s) bottleneck pageing or accessing pagefiles.
Solution, change the page fileing from the hard drive to the flash drive.
This can very easily be done, insert the USB drive, or SD drive (best), then ...
start > computer > right click USB/SD drive (sometimes E:)
click properties > Ready boost tab > then select ...
'dedicate this device to ready boost'
4094MB is the max the sys will allow.
This will be most apparent for players already pushing their sys
to play the game, you gain the most improvement. For the power computer you'll save wear and tear on yoru Hard drive, and still see smoother operations in game, and will allow you to run more aps at the same time before crashing/errors
Becuase the flash drive is so fast, theirs less chance for mem conflicts.
You can buy an SD micro drive at walmart for about 12.oo (4MB) and 19.99 (8MB). I prefer Sandisk as they claim that heat is not a factor in SD drive opertations.
Some people remember this feature from Vista and rightfully hated it, its improved greatly in vista w/service pack 3+
and windows 7
[ you may wish to upgrade to windows 7 64bit OS if your system has more then 8GB ram installed and has a 64bit architecture] (higher then 8GB ram goes unused in 32bit sys]
Hope this improves your gaming experience...
I'll see you out there..
