Okay, so I just had this idea sprout up in my head, but I don't know how plausible it would be. Now, I've flight right up to (and into ) my newly created moon, and found that I could not mine it. Could I possibly create a cluster of asteroids, all partially embedded inside of the moons surface (so as to allow mining, and encourage 'searching' for ' mineral deposits)?
I could probably create a lunar texture that would match the asteroids to help sell the effect. Also, would the asteroids' collision data cause them to 'self destruct' upon contact with the lunar surface?
I've put an asteroid cave inside an asteroid field and had chunks of asteroid sticking out of the inside walls of the cave ... so, what you propose sounds like it might be possible. You can at least give it a try.

And they didn't just burst? YES! Hey, and with the beacon idea you mentioned in the other post, I could even simulate a mining outpost! This is great! So, how do I go about adding asteroids, and how many parameters do I have control over?
Download the EL customizing kit ... it should have examples for all the things you can add to your modded galaxy. And then spend a little time reading over this:
IIRC, asteroids come in three sizes. Maybe four. Either way, they come in clusters ... ergo, it's easier to first plot your asteroid field and then decide where to place the moon.
Btw, you can also place a construct station inside a planet ... but, since planets and construct stations are both oriented "up" ... you need to sink the station at the north pole.

Ooh, I hadn't even though of that! Thanks for the idea!
Okay, so I've been poking around with the kit, and have taught myself to add 'outposts' (beacons) and a 'mining colony' (constructor station) to my moon, and they worked out great.
My Only problem at this point is whether or not I can get the asteroids to stay put along the lunar surface. It would seem that the center of an asteroid cluster is very... well, for lack of a better term, random. I tried setting the location of my asteroid cluster and my moon to match up, but the asteroids are jumping about 10 clicks or so away from where I tell them to spawn.
I even tried to correct for the offset, but to no avail... Haha, at this point I'm considering building an entire moon out of 'roid caves and throwing THAT into an asteroid field!
Well ... in Mercenary, the asteroids rotate. But I don't remember if they did or not in Legends. I know I had them sticking out of the interior walls of an asteroid cave ... and I doubt they were rotating.
I was trying to create a "destroyed moon" effect, putting a beacon inside the cave with a memorial to defending Gaians popping up when you got close enough. I created the asteroids first. I then entered the game, flew to a good location within the asteroid field, copied my exact coordinates, and used them to plot the cave's position.

Oh, that's really cool .
I tried flying to the relative center of the field can copied my coordinates, reapplying them to the moon afterwards, but I still noticed the field shifting away from the moon. Of course, later, when I discovered an asteroid embedded in the surface of my world, I started trying different values for the 'RoidsSize=' field and that helped to localize the asteroids a little better.
It just occurred to to me that the input values are zero through five (previously I acted as though it was one through five). Maybe that will be enough to solve my problem... unless of course it only adds a single cluster... in which case, is there a limit to how many asteroids can be stuffed into one sector, like how there is with scenery objects?
IIRC, one cluster per sector. In fact, only one of anything can be placed in a single sector. But each cluster of asteroids is made up of many smaller asteroid fields ... and trial-and-error is the only way I know of for tweaking it to look just the way you want. Except, of course, using graph paper ... which I do a lot.

Uh, then how in the world have we BOTH managed to create multiple beacons/scenery objects in the same sector? (or is a sector much smaller than I thought?)
Re-reading the entire Trilogy takes a lot longer with pencil and paper in hand, making notes. Then, there are all the Robot stories ... and prequals. And short stories I admittedly never read. Thank goodness for Wiki.
