SeeJay's Quest (and the non-linear road down the IMG quest)

Post by DaveK »

Hi SeeJay and MapMan and Vice :)

What is the state of play with your (seeJay's) quest? - I see that the quest section of your site is still locked!

Since I've got stalled in the IMG quest having tried and tried and tried (and eventually having given up) to win a race, would you consider allowing entry to your quest without completing the IMG quest.

In the early days of PC's ( the 80's - yep before some of you were born) I avidly played "adventure games" - I still have fond memories of the Zork cycle). The early ones had an element of fun similar to banging your head against a brick wall - ie it's great when you stop! Later they learned how to let you explore via multiple paths - epitomised by Myst

If it was possible to access IMG tasks in a non-linear way but only get the rewards after a certain number of points are earned (so one couldn't simply skip the hard bits), I'd carry on and eventually come back to the things that are stopping me. As it is, after 20+ races that I've lost (and not enjoyed) I'm not getting better with practice despite using advice from the forum threads. I've given up. If there was a practice mode where I could just concentrate on getting through the tube and so eventually get quicker, I would try it - as it is I'm so desperate not to be passed in a race that I can't concentrate on technique and I am passed and hence never even get the thrill of passing the finishing line (or popping out of the tube!!) Then It's eject, restart the game, restart the task, fly to the race start, get beat and repeat :(

I'd love to embark on your quest if you can find time to finish/test/release it - I think that "rumours" leading to a quest could prove to be a significant addition to the Evochron Universe and a successful first try would encourage others to offer such(optional after all) digressions!

bty still love EvoMetrics (actually couldn't fly without it)

:)

Silly human, your puppies are laughing at you for quitting. Try switching to a fast military frame or a small civilian vessel with big engines and then only tap on the afterburner and keep you speed below 850-900 to keep you from sliding out of the lane. Don't worry about the other hairless one flying against you, just focus on your own fur as you fly and you will then win. Then you can look your puppies in the eye and have pride.

Ha!

My whole point is that I would rather spend my time kicking Vonari ar$% (which is quite easy) than racing with AI (who can't pass the Turing test)

It's unfair really that Vonari IQ = Vonari shoe size ( approx human shoe size * 1.25); explaining Vonari flat foot duck battle tactics :P:P:P:P:P

no offense intended ;)

Hi Dave.

The quest I'm working on (it's actually a team right now) is an extention of the IMG as you say.
The point is that you won't stand a chance completing it if you can't pass the IMG.

I understand your frustration, but I'm not gonna change the setup for the quest.

What I can do is help you get passed any mission and teach you anything you need to improve your
skills. Either we team up in MP or I can u2u any help you require to continue.

The quest is setup to be a challange. The IMG is setup to teach you the basics.

You will need your skills AND think outside the "box" to manage this one.;)

fair enough - back to the race tube!:)

Is there a programming reason for quests being linear or is it just Vice's choice?

Hi Dave,

Have you tried installing the Afterburner Drive? It really kicks your ship forward... very useful for races although it sucks your energy so not much good in combat. Just be careful not to be heavy-handed with it.. it only needs a tap. I'd be happy to help you out on any of the other missions. I just recently got to the end of the quest with help from other pilots and we completed the missions so fast!

Could there be a way to bind the number of opponents to the number of players doing the mission?
Like 1 player = 20 enemies
2 players = 30 enemies etc...

Hi

Thanks for the advice and offers of help - I'll try logging onto R1 at a time acceptable to her ladyship and see if it matches anyone from Europe or the USA. I would like to complete the quest and I would like to get to the end of a race! I wonder if Vice could alter the end of race timer so that the tube doesn't disappear for a few minutes so that I could practice!

I'm 3/4 way to Sol (from Deneb) at the moment so after the holiday there I'll head back to Sapphire, store the StarMaster and buy something niftier and try out the suggestions. I suspect that the agility of my present rig wouldn't stand a chance even if I was a much better pilot!

I completed the race in a Starmaster, I did have a class 12 set of wings on it and a class 9 Engine.
All I needed to do was set IDS to x2 and set the speed around 900 to prevent drifting out of the corners and I beat the race with ease.
Didn't even had to use my Afterburner at all since the IA was stuck at around 600-700ish max speed due to the inability to use the IDS Multiplier.

If you download the customizing kit and examine the example quest program, you'll notice that each part of the quest is numbered sequentially. Meaning, you need to follow one message in order to get the next message in line.

Hi Rush.

That is not anything that can be set when creating a contract.

That is a question for Vice and I'm sure he will reply with an answer.
