Hi
My buddy and I are thinking about buying this game. The thing we are concerned about is the freedom of the game. Can you for example; build your own space station and have your own faction and send out other ships to mine for you and generally play it more like an first person rts, kinda like the battlezone games? Also is it possible for me and my buddy to build one spacestation each and then battle each other?

Hi Mollenmannen, welcome to the game and forum. Yes, you can do all the things you questioned about in the right settings and circumstances....

im not really sure how i should interpret these answers
. sure i was asking about a very specific feature but i don't want to purchase the game to find out it's based around randomly generated missions of different types.

Mollemannen,
Welcome to the forum.
To answer your questions:
1. Yes, you can build stations.
2. Yes, you can have your own faction (in multiplayer)
3. Yes, you can hire ships and send them out to mine for you.
4. Maybe. You can do all of the things above, including giving commands to your wingmen, such as mine, attack, form up, etc. However, you can't really tell them where to go, what to eat, whom to pray to, or whatever. When you hire wingmen, you can give them some orders, but they follow them in their own way.
So, for example, you can tell them to mine asteroids, but you can't specify which asteroid to mine.
In short, there is a lot of freedom, and that freedom extends to your wingmen
I recommend you try out the demo. You can take the tutorials and then play for a limited time until you decide if you like it or not.
