in game chat freezes game

when i press the default numpad . button to chat it instantly freezes the game, any suggestions?

10/4 looks like i need a mic, and mercenaries is somewhat slower for me then legends, maybe its just time to get a new comp, i got a dell with pentium 4 and its about 4 years old now about... windows xp cough BLACK cough lol but anyway good to be back
