Good grief... (SPOILER)
Tonight, rather than exploring, I decided to continue the quest.
The capitol ship missions were quite tough. But the last one before I headed to Sierra war zone.. WTH!!!
OK it's bad enough that I jumped in to a hostile system. Had to jump a couple of times to get hostile Navy off my butt, then rush the station and hurriedly pay docking fees to get in the station before any one of the 20+ missiles that got launched at me hits.
I take the mission (12 fighters (!), 4 times more than I'd ever taken on solo... that ought to be fun..). I refuel, and as soon as I leave the station I slam F2 so I don't get taken out by the swarms of red Navy ships nearby.
When I finish the jump, I find a mad mob of red Guild ships that I'm supposed to take down. No biggie, I figure I can zoom & boom to keep from getting pummeled until I thin them out some. Wasn't going to try flying in circles around them, not enough countermeasures. Just hey-diddle-diddle straight up the middle at 2-2.5k, wait, make another pass, etc.
The problem was more reds keep showing up. I mean, a LOT of them. At 5k range from the mob my entire screen was still full. Two red Navy destroyers joined the fray, so every time I zoom back through the mob I'm taking flak hits, 15-20 missiles at a shot that I have to outrun...
It's pure madness. No greens to help at all.
I keep targeting the Guild ships, ignoring the rest, hoping that I can finish the mission.
A half hour and a LOT of fuel later, I get the contract completed. My hand was cramped and I was sweating.
That was intense.
Vice, hats off man, you made a real good game!

Can't wait to jump on MP. We live waaaaaay out in the country here, no cable / DSL available, and Hughes just don't cut it for gaming (or much else, for that matter!)
Good news though, we got a drop date for a T1 line this week. Loop gets dropped on the 29th, service should be up by the 4th. It's slow by today's standards, but it's low latency, and good for gaming.

Yeah a full fleet would have helped on that mission. I did it solo like Trent and I still can't decide whether it was exasperating or thrilling.
See my post about raising rep in Pearl for similar experiences. Taking combat missions in hostile systems (which is the only type available that will help raise your rep) means constantly dealing with the same kind of situation. Thing is, fleets only help you make the missions easier rather than contributing to your rep. No such problem for the quest missions.

Of course, it's hard to hire a fleet when there aren't any greens around in the first place. You have to bribe them into being friendly with you first!

Couldn't you just hire the fleet in a friendlier system and then go to the hostile one? Unless your in the middle of raising your rep I can't see a problem with doing that rather than bribing hostiles.

Fleets hired in other systems will not follow you through gates.

Huh. Guess I am misremembering; though I do seem to call that when I was working to increase my rep in Cygnus, they did not leave with me when I jumped to one of the adjacent systems. It would make sense that they should be able to follow you; else it would not be very helpful to hire them to protect you on multi-system trade routesOriginally posted by PandaBear

If they don't do gates, I wonder if they follow you when you travel the direct route (like into Sol)? And, if they do, can they run out of fuel? And, if they can, is there any way to refuel them?

Yes they do follow you but if you have a mantis jumpdrive and they have a class 1 jumpdrive they will have a hard time catching up with you.......Try jumping 6 sectors and see how long it takes them to catch up with you and you can calculate what class jump drive they have....LOL....
