Questions/suggestions before buying?

Post by Kael »

Greetings.

I'm pretty sure that there are a group of us from the DF forums who are thinking about buying EM. I have just a few questions/suggestions before hitting the trigger on paypal though :)

I really like the feeling of modded freelancer -88flak- and X3:TC with -fleet invasion- mods. This meant that factions at war would constantly spawn fleets that invaded neighboring systems to seek and destroy, and in the case of X3:TC, completely take over.

So my question is, I can't witness this in the demo, is there any way to increase NPC spawn rates or have constantly invading fleets in warring systems in EM and definable borders through owned stations/planets? Perhaps as you get closer to a faction's home system have more fleets and ships spawn to have continuing warfare. It would really up the immersion level of EM and make it an easy sell to me and my mates if we could have a multiplayer version of an ongoing space war in which we could play a small part ala Freespace 2.

Basically, I really want to feel as a small part of a living, warring universe - but criticism I've read of EM say that it can feel rather boring and lifeless in it's space.

The demo and videos are a tough sell, as there isn't much to be seen.

What do you diehards have to say about EM? Thanks in advance for any answers.

 There's at least one screen shot around here showing how territories are displayed on the quadrant map. Other than that, Sapphire is a piece of cake. Nowadays, even Olympus can get hairy when doing a combat contract.

Yes, that's what I noticed.

I want to know how much more things get interesting out of demo area. All we get to see are a few ships wandering around and not much interaction. You can blow a bunch of them out of the sky before your faction settings switch and the navy starts chasing you.

I really want to be sold on this game but besides high ratings on moddb and a review on a Christian gaming website of all things, all I've heard are hit or miss reviews on forums, about people's Love for EM or hate the series for being boring.

I want to hear about the love.

"what I Love about Evochron Mercenary is the MP" and the action that ensues when a Group of Evochron pilots show up to help take on the Hostiles that have surrounded you :D there is a good selection of different clans that have similar Goals in mind but are quite diverse in other actions...and if you just want to explore on your own during MP that's ok too...I see a lot of new pilots testing out MP before getting too involved with others and they have found themselves welcomed by the community with open arms and when they have questions there is always someone who is able to help them....Boring?? Naw that's just a state of mind for someone who cannot allow themselves to be immersed in the roll play of the Game...After a Good battle with Hostiles, PvP or CvC you can bet there will be mentioned of it in the Forum where the jibes and jabs will continue in Friendly Fashion...and if your lucky someone may just have remembered to have taken a screen-shot or two so you can share the experience through a Visual display ;)

If you like fighting, then, EM is the game for you. Most systems are hoaching in enemy AIs, and, they come at you mob handed.

EM, hasn't been out that long. I've been engaged, mainly, in building up ship/equipment/money, and, subsequently haven't gotten around to exploring much - yet!

But, to give you an example, from a previous game EL. I decided to visit a hidden planet, in the Pearl system. It took me a solid two hours of fighting to clear enough room to land on the planet station. That was around 300 kills. Then I had to fight my way off planet again - that sound like enough fighting for you?

In MP, if you don't find the AI enough of a challenge, there's always PvP. Put up a shout, in MP, that you want a personal battle, you won't have to wait long. Do it i n a hostile system and the enemy AI will join in too - makes it really interesting!

There's multi waypoint missions where you can be facing more than 60 enemy AIs, including capital ships. Outside of the War Zones you can even recruit friendly AIs and form a fleet. The AIs, in EM, fight back, and fight back hard.

Join in, it's only $30, you'll enjoy it

MP is very good. Lots of action, adventures, fights...
Another new MP interaction is exploration: there are many hidden systems and secrets. In a thread you can find something about the "Unknowns" (there are a couple of recent screenshots), new rumored mysterious things/ships.
We are organizing an exploration of the quadrant, with an external website to track our progress.

It takes a lot of time, and those who haven't enough patience (and maybe maturity?) could find it "boring".
But the universe is surely alive, and evolving. Maybe some mods or future versions of the game will feature a dynamic presence of different factions/races, like the Vonari in the north.

:o Oddly, when I was flying with Starbuck today, with both of us in our own ships, the number of reds never got out of hand. It wasn't until we teamed up in one ship, with one of us as a turret gunner, that the reds multiplied like rabbits. And the only other time I see it like that is when doing contracts alone.

Seems like the reds only come out when the odds are vastly in their favor.

 Hah! Installed latest test release and did some solo work in Sirius. Four or five combat missions and not once did the enemy call in the dirty dozen. Luck maybe ... so I'm knocking on wood, just in case.

I bought the game. Thanks for the answers, you all. It helped. Even though EM isn't quite the perfect space sim I'm looking/waiting for- I'm always willing to support a independent dev making a solid effort, and seems as though support and updates come continuously.

Hope to see some of you out in space when I get access to my desktop again - currently traveling :) And I hope I can get some others on board as well.
