@Vice: Linux is always an option...

@tha_rami: YOU, MISBELIEVER, you have made me mad  to find a way to take a screenshot in linux...
well, it's only a matter of pressing the prt/scr key and that's all, but then i had to find a free image repository (easy, imageshack) and then post it here. UFF ;). so, here it is...

Image

screenshot specs:
Kubuntu 10.04 was running since last day (approx 37h), no optimization was made to run EM, only automatic upgrades, thare were the standard demons running in background plus the 3 widgets visible (clock, rss feeder, wether forecasts) and a torrent client downloading backtrack4 (since i use shell interface i.e. command line most of the time, there is no icon indicating it). EM was running at full details within a virtual desktop of 1024x768 to show the desktop, but it should run directly on framebuffer at med details and with only the needed demons to make the OS stand to achieve 10-15fps, maybe better in XUbuntu.
could not try multiplayer since now, 'cause i'm lazy and do not want to reboot again:P.

Hello. This sounds great. I'm going home and install Linux tonight.
Is there any possibility to move my EM profile from the WinXP installation of EM to the Linux one so I don't have to start from scratch again?

Most excellent. I shall have to try it under my Mandriva 2010.1 rig once I get it built this weekend--just waiting on some watercooling parts. That machine will be dual-boot, so either way I should finally be in the sim within 2 weekends.

SeeJay, you should be able to copy the profile over; you might have to save it first to a USB drive or something if you're not doing a dual-boot.

GAlex, what version of Wine does Kubuntu 10.04 have on there? Have you tried it with PlayOnLinux (a cool wrapper for Wine that also allows you a lot simpler configuration and isolation of separate Wine installs)?

Yup, in fact, I'll go ahead and split this thread up so the Linux related posta are on their own. Watch for the new thread to be transferred to the Mercenary forum.

Thanks Valander. Do I have to install EM again on the Linux Harddrive if I use the same computer but boot with Linux or could I run the same install but start it from Linux?

You'll most likely want to install on Linux, rather than just trying to run from your already installed version on your Windows drive, since there are (probably) some registry entries and such that need to be written into Wine's registry.

PlayOnLinux is a great front end for Wine that really simplifies a lot of installation and configuration. it should be available on most newer Linux distros (I know it's in Mandriva 2010.0 and 2010.1, and probably Ubuntu/Kubuntu 10.04). You can read a little more about it at http://www.playonlinux.com.

Once I get my system up, I may see about writing an installer script for PlayOnLinux. That likely will be at least 3 weeks out, though, and will also depend on whether or not I can get my X52 working properly in Linux.

Thanks a lot for you assistance Valander. I'll install and se if I can get it right this weekend. We use Linux at work, so I'm not completely lost! LOL. I use a X52 as well so this will be interesting!?!?!

@SeeJay: yup. Just keep in mind that at this point, this is all theoretical from my side. ;)

I did do a little digging, and there are apparently drivers for the X52, but no profile editors. You might be able to install the profile editor into the same wine prefix/PlayOnLinux as your EM, though.

i've never used playonlinux, since i want the less simplifications on my system and wine on kubuntu is already too simple (that is it has a GUI and everything with a GUI is slow and limited).

i usually boot backtrack, but my wife wants icons and windows so i had to install Kubuntu (it's better after you have opened a fullscreen bash shell)

my exact software config was:
clean Kubuntu 10.04 installation, updated the standard way: this should provide wine 1.2-ubuntu-something.

in wineconfig i've setted a virtual desktop (needed for another game which doesn't recognize X d.m. resolutions) but you can safetly disable it and run the game in optimized wm.

wine modifications (needed to run most directx games on linux):
type:
wine regedit
... select HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareWineDirect3D
... add: OffscreenRenderingMode –> fbo
UseGLSL –> enabled
VideoMemorySize –>256 (or what you got)
... install the original dx libs under wine (best to use "winetricks" shell script easily found on internet)
... always with winetricks install standard m$ runtime libs, i.e. msvc50, 60, 80, etc..., and all other things you like (not really necessary, but who cares?)
... install devenum.dll, imm32.dll, dxdiagn.dll and override them as "native"
... override all dx dlls as native except for dxinput and net related ones (set these to builtin)
... in winecfg set to Hardware and flag the on

not all of the previous steps are needed, but the more you got, the less issues you will have to run windows and dx games in linux.

also stay tuned with WineHQ for nonstandard configs for your favourites games.

ok, after all this i've installed EM under wine and the game runs.

played with gfx configs to achieve the higer fps with the maximum details possible: planetary details count less than bit plane depth (16 is waaay faster), 3d cockpit off and nebula off.

I hope that those of you with newer GFX Cards, powerfull multicore parallel CPU's 64bit, more RAM and faster HDs could play it smooth.

as of myself, max fps in linux was 8, while in windows 18 (ok i know what you are thinking: it sucks!:(.
