I heard that you can take the metal that you mine and turn it into armour and things like that for your ship, how i the world do you do that.

It's not useable. However, armor sells for a bigger profit than unprocessed metal. Sometimes certain metals can make usable items, such as platinum. Get enough and you can assemble a probe, which you can use to detect players remotely.
