Can I run the dedicated server for Renegades (and or Legends) from a rented server?
My friends and I rent a server from Ultimate Game Server. I have a custom setup where I have up to 5 games on it. I simply log into the control panel and pick which one I want running (I can only have one running at a time). Right now I have codwaw running most of the time. I purchased Evochron Renegades (and soon Legends) and would like to set them up on the rented server if possible.
PS. Should I post this under Technical help?
Is it possible to start the dedicated server with a command line? Wanted to see if this would run on a rented server.

Rented servers may not have the 3D capabilities needed to run the program, nor do they typically give you the access needed to enable such capabilities (installing drivers for example) even if they have the hardware installed. Only way to know for sure though is to try.

I haven't tried running the dedicated server for Renegades yet. But as a dedicated server it should only run the game and not even need a decent video card. I could run a server for Unreal Tournament on a computer that couldn't even run the game to actually play on, but had no problem being just the server. These are servers designed to run games like Call Of Duty World At War. I'm pretty sure that game is more graphically intense.
My concern was how it would work for players joining the game and saving their progress.

My friends and I rent a server and would like to see about putting Evochron Renegades on it. I was hoping that there would be a way to start the server up using a command line which might make running it on a dedicated rented server do-able. It would be cool to run the game with 10 to 20 players.

Yes, consult the instructions included with the program for details. In short, you need to configure the text2.dat file to include the settings you want, then just launch the program (which can be done via command line).

This server program operates significantly different than many of the 'traditional' server programs you may be familiar with. The system it runs on will need to meet the criteria Eclipse and I outlined above.I haven't tried running the dedicated server for Renegades yet. Indeed, although the dedicated server program requires lower specifications, it still needs a relatively powerful computer to run correctly and do everything it needs to do smoothly. We're not talking NASA-computers here, but an acceptable videocard definitely is a plus.

Oh, okay. didn't realize that. I'm not sure how the computers are setup on the server I rent. I'll let the admin know that. They're really quite helpful and try to accommodate the renters. Thanks.

I've tried this on several data-centre computers using various microsoft machines. While I've not tried to run it from command line, I have tried remote connect (RDP) and other similar systems.Originally posted by Mcduke

VNC should work, though I've not tried it ( security issues since the machine I have access to has other uses). Other systems are out there that work, but often these are expensive (team viewer 4 for instance will cost you over $1000 for a licence on a server machine).
Most data-centre machines should be of a high enough spec for this sort of use though...........

I received and answer from a ticket I put in to Ultimate Game Server. They're going to look into it over the next few days and let me know. When I find out I'll post it here. Since these servers are designed to run the top games like, CODWAW and Crysis, I'm hoping it'll run Renegades and of course Legends. By the way. just how many players can be setup to run on the server? Does it just depend on the bandwidth available? My CODWAW can run with up to 20 players. Is there anyone out there running with this many players for Evochron?
