It would be sweet if there was something you could buy that would allow you to scan the current commodity prices in your sector for trading without having to land.

that would defeat some of the need to explore and yes I know it takes up time but so do a lot of things in the Sim. I like the fact that I have to invest a good portion of my time exploring even if I don't find things all the time. That is what the main part (I believe) of this Sim is about. On the plus side you get to see different types of planets and weather.:)

Actually this information appears in the 'news' console does it not?

If you mean remote checking of actual inventories, then no, that would significantly reduce challenge, risk, exploration, and time investment. From another thread on the topic:

That (remote inventory checking) risks reducing the need to travel. If you can just jump to one location and get a bunch of information about everything in the entire area, then there's little reason to explore and travel. Such things take away the very need for travelling around in space. It begs the question, why should you travel anywhere and do anything if you can just remotely check for what you want whenever you want to by just being in the general area. Such 'remote information' essentially eliminates much of the game itself by signficantly reducing challenge and risk (particularly in a game where the space environment is not just wallpaper and asteroids, but a universe where you can fly into planet atmospheres, into nebulae clouds, near stars, and navigate in full 3D space). Granted, there can be variations on this that alter the degree of impact it/they would have and when limited, remote information can be benificial to gameplay. That is why there is a certain level of remote detection up to the limit of one sector (inventory news console, commodity market ticker, planetary economy classes on the nav map, etc, for example, which gives you general information about the market conditions and likely availability of particular commodities).

However, if by 'scan the current commodity prices in your sector for trading without having to land' you mean prices only, then that is already available to you. Just click on the News Console from the Inventory Console and you will see all of the commodity values for the sector you are in along with other useful information about the sector's economy and status.
