Broken by the situation at home, I decided to leave.

Earth, unshaken in the conviction that it was and always had been the center of the universe, was in ruins. Starfleet, it's former glory a fading memory, was a political quagmire. I had no family remaining after the attempted invasion and although Starfleet claimed our sacrifices as a victory, there was nothing more in Sol for me.

So, after completing my last mission orbiting Saturn, I ran a query on my default search engine to find the nearest inhabited solar system, set a course and told Nicky to engage...

Nicole did the best she could, but with limited battery power, no solar collectors to recharge and fuel cells hitting reserve, Alpha Centauri was just too great a leap. Nicky told me she was cutting power to all non-essential systems to "maximize mission achievement probability"...I would never talk to her again.

I miss Nicky, that smart girl. She had been with me since my enlistment those ten long years ago. Every pilot is issued a girl like her, but she was special. For better or worse, she was always with me.

Looking after me...

Knowing that a course to Alpha Centauri would kill us both, she adjusted our trajectory and took me down a different path.

Nicky landed me at Sapphire Station with the last of her reserves. Nowhere near Alpha Centauri, but close to the star clusters of Orion, Cygnus and Pices... a chance at survival for one of us, at least, and now she's gone....

The authorities at Sapphire Station took my runabout (and my Nicky) in trade for a new ship and a few credits, and set me on my own. A pilot in the cantina suggested that I should buy a mining something or other for my ship.

Ship?

Mining?

Something or other?

The people here seem kind and friendly, willing to let me earn my keep as I please, but there's a darkness; a gaurded expression of dread that I can't quite fathom.

I'm sure I'll find out soon enough in this great uncharted expanse of Evochron...

Thanks for the welcome, guys. I truly am enjoying the sim. It was exactly what I was looking for as I was waxing nostalgic and searching for something similar to X-Wing vs Tie Fighter or Tachyon or Freelancer. This game has elements of all of these and more.

I'm also enjoying my brand spankin' new X52 flightstick (the old Microsoft stick just wouldn't cut it any more). I think I may have spent almost as much time tweaking it as I have in-game.

Oh, and dredging up those old formulas from Avionics school about resistance and voltage and current and circuits in parallel and series so I could build the IR clip to go with Freetrack. Not sure if I like that or the stick better, tho...we'll see.

Also, tho, I'm really enjoying this forum. It's good to find a forum so well moderated and populated by such civil and intelligent people. The trolls and flamers that make other forums so tiresome simply don't exist here. Your team does a great job and should be congratulated. However, I do wish Nigel_Strange would write more. He's an excellent author.

@Vice, thanks for publishing such a fine product and providing the customer service and support that you do. I've read about some of the things you've done for your customers and I am impressed. Outstanding at any price!

That's all for now. Gotta go test the new controller setup. Gotta add Forward and Reverse Inertial somewhere, and View Behind and View up...It never ends.
