How have I missed this game for so long?!

Post by adscott1982 »

I'm downloading the game right now!

I've been wanting a game like this ever since I stopped playing Elite 2 years ago. More high profile games such as X3 never satisfied me, I've always wanted to be able to land on planets just like in the good ol days, hopefully this game will satisfy that.

I've searched and searched in the past 5 or 6 years for a game like this; today I came across an old post on a forum from 2007 that pointed me in the direction of Renegades. Now I'm finally here.

I've spent the last couple of hours going through the information about the game, and reading what reviews there are. This game seems perfect for me.

I have a question: How big is the Evochron universe?

Will I feel a sense of exploration, the feeling that I am exploring uncharted areas?

The feeling of exploration is what I want more than anything else from games like these.

To Vice:

Congratulations on making this series of games (all by yourself!!!), sorry it took me so long to find you. ;)

Hello and welcome, glad you found the game also :)
I have a question: How big is the Evochron universe?
Most solar systems are near the galactic ecliptic, which is +/- 2 SY sectors, so while the size limit is technically extremely high, you'll find most accessible objects within about 10,000X4X10,000 sectors, or roughly 400,000,000 sectors, which would be 2,000,000 (sector units) X 4,000,000,000 in size, enough space that you probably couldn't practically travel through it all over months or years. Most systems are charted however, making it easy to find within that space region along with jump gates to make them accessible. Some solar systems are uncharted and are in deep space, they are much more difficult to locate. Likewise for a few hidden planets on the edges of certain solar systems.
Will I feel a sense of exploration, the feeling that I am exploring uncharted areas
If you travel out into uncharted deep space, you may. There are some techniques you can use to help narrow your field of search to locate such uncharted systems. If you don't mind the spoiler, I can provide those to you via u2u. Otherwise, you'll likely learn how to navigate and explore as you play the game and come up with your own search patterns and observation techniques. Even in charted space, there is plenty to discover that isn't picked up on the navigation sensor system (which generates the nav map), requiring visual and/or radar detection. Asteroid caves in particular can be fun to explore in.

Thanks very much Vice. For now I think I'll play through the storyline and see where it takes me. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to purchase the game tomorrow when my new Visa card comes through.

I've just spent the last couple of hours playing through the trial, well done on the tutorial, is that your voice? :D

I made a couple of mistakes though :D I docked with that first station in sapphire and went to buy an upgraded Fulcrum. Wasn't sure what I was doing though so once I bought it I clicked on my installed parts on the Inventory screen and accidentally sold it again. It did not appear again on the ships sale list, so I had to restart!! Without a fulcrum life in space could be a bit TOO realistic for me :)

Thanks for the welcome thetiebers, I'm sure I'm long way from working out how multiplayer works, it's all a little overwhelming right now, but when I do I'm sure I'll see you there.

What I liked best from the 45 mins I've played properly so far is editing the appearance of my ship! It's amazing how I can make my little noob ship look badass lol

I never realised DarkBasic was so powerful btw

Welcome adscott1982, MP is no different than SP, but join in when you feel ready. Enjoy the game.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

We will remember them.

Welcome.

DarkBASIC Classic isn't this powerful, at least, it wasn't. Vice's efforts have caused the Game Creators to update DarkBASIC for the first time in a long, long time. Although I must admit there are some rather good DarkBASIC Classic projects around.

The game is pretty epic in scope, indeed. You'll have fun exploring, at least I know I had. Finding one of those impossible to find planets just can't be beaten.

Yes, really good game, for exploring, fighting, trading, everything.
You can play your game in Mp, with your SP account, also awesome.
See you out there sometime.

Welcome home!

Welcome to the game, and the forum, adscott1982. Don't be scared of MP, you're not going to be slaughtered by everyone else there, in fact, the exact opposite. You'll find that the majority of MP players will be only too happy to give you any assistance that you ask for.

adscott1982 please get your friends to play! This is a great game!
The best part of this game is the people your playing with or against (depending on whether your feeling nice or feeling evil and attack them). The graphics are awesome and your the Captain of your own ship.
I am working on getting my novalogic F16 /Mig29/F22 buddies into this game.
