New player with some quick questions

K, so im new to the game, and so far its really great, but my main question is, is it really crucial to do the story? Will i be able to find these things like Rift Space and Wormholes without it?

Also, if anyone has details on how the civilian ranking system works that would be awesome! What with the number before it says what rank you are?

Thanks, and one more question, what do licenses do? So far all I can tell is that it makes a station friendly to dock at regardless of rep in the system, but for how much they cost I feel like they so something more that im missing...

You can also get things at a discount price with a licence, and a licence also makes the station protect you by keeping Hostiles away from you while your docked. It is not a good idea to buy a licence at a station where you want to trade goods! It is like you own the station and you would not sell to yourself items at a high price!;)
