Confused on reputation

I've tried and tried but I absolutely cannot gain reputation with the navy.

I did an escort mission for them where I took out 3 fighters and my standings actually dropped from 58 to 56 in the news console. So I decided to run 3 'find cargo' mission for them in a row. My standings remain at 56.

What do I have to do?

What system? Single player or multiplayer? Are you sure the contracts were for the Navy and not against them? Cargo missions may only give you a little credit, combat missions should help more. Also, just patrolling for enemy rebel and guild ships can also boost your reputation. If you find any hostile Navy ships, also consider bribing them.

I'm in singleplayer.

The contracts were listed as for the Navy.

I'll try finding an destroying some rebel and guild ships and see how that helps. Thanks.

I killed a few rebels and nothing really happened, but I kept on trekking and the very next cargo mission I did pushed me from 56 to 60 navy standing.

So I guess it just doesn't all happen EVERY mission. It's like a block of good deeds results in a block of standings. I'm good now!

I took a passenger from Rivoch to the base near Erato II. Then I took a passenger from there back to Rivoch. And found that my reputation in Rivoch had gone way down, and that's pretty friendly space. One of those passengers must have been a bad guy, lol.
