Easy Docking

Post by Tpol »

If you want to fly to a station and go straight into the docking bay, here's how:

1. Set your pitch to zero (it's the little ladder thingie in your viewscreen gunsight, zero is the line in between -10 and 10. Set yourself absolutely on that line).

2. Open your nav map and right-click on the station to set it as your destination.

3. Turn off the Inertia Dampening System - IDS (hit spacebar and make sure that in your lower left ship status screen, it says Inertia instead of IDS).

4. Now hit Jump (default key is F2) and relax.

You will fly straight into the station dock every single time, no fuss, no muss, no struggling with the gravity field, etc.

You old hats at this game will probably laugh at me for this, cause you've probably known it all along. And I know last week azpatriot told me something about turning off IDS and jumping into a station. But it didn't work for me until I figured out the part about setting the pitch to zero. Ah, perfect hassle-free docking every time.

Also, I apologize in advance if this is in the documentation somewhere and I simply didn't catch it. I've been struggling with finding the easiest way to dock all along.

I remember saving the stations in my nav log to do this, instead of right clicking.

...Wait, that wasn't that long ago :P.

I tested this out. It works. I'm sailing through all the stations with ease. Tpol, I also tested this out with the gates, I'm sailing through them as well. Great tip. Thanks.

Another tip is that, though not all, most gates in the systems have an orientation of zero on your heading indicator so to travel quickly through the systems just set your heading and pitch to zero, turn your ids off bring up your nav map and right click on the gate and jump. Once you come out the other side select the next gate and jump again. To make the trip even faster adjust your energy to your engines so that your jump drive recharges even faster. You can cover most of the galactic map rather quickly that way.

yeah, i worked this one out.
some provisos:
1. sometimes your jump is auto-adjusted for stations very close to planets , so set your bearing before your jump so you approach the station from the side away from the planet.
2. gates should always be approached on a 0 or 180 heading, but wormholes dont matter.
3. jumping into the centre of a black-hole wormhole can be fun but you need to tweak approach heading and coordinates in order to survive.
4. someone else said it was possibel to jump straight into a city dock, but i reckon that might be a little tricky, lol

Folks

You are all obviously right, but then why does it not work for me!!

OK I set the pitch to 0, I select the station on the Nav Map, IDS Off, F2 and Hey Presto I find myself flying straight to the middle of the station. Not I might add to the top of the station where the entrance is!!!!

What am I doing wrong?

Left-clicking will select the location that you click on, however, right clicking will detect the object you're clicking on and set the destination to the best approach for that object.

Right clicking works!!
It totally does, eh. Vice implemented it a few months ago and it must've been one of the most efficient additions he came up with.

ALT+F2 is quite good too, yeah, especially if you combine it with the above trick.
