Doing my head in [Spoiler Alert!]

So, I've followed a particular trail that started with a particular star and now I'm in the vicinity of a certain planet beginning with the designation 's'. I've spent hours -- HOURS -- in this system, I've explored every stellar body nearby, I've performed a comprehensive scan of the sector 's' is located in as well as systematically exploring the sectors adjacent (basically everything in a cube, two sectors from the center); suffice to say, I've found nothing, and I'm stumped.

If someone could give me a lead to follow, I'd be grateful. I'm all for exploring, but it went from 'fun' to 'frustrating' about an hour ago, and this is from a guy who managed to get right up to the end of the Riftspace line without help.

I would suggest swapping your magnifying glass for a spyglass.

Assuming you're already in the correct star system, you might try following Horace Greeley's advice ... except, instead of following it as directed, take a ninety degree turn to the right. And keep on going for maybe a handful of jumps.

Aye, it does. I've been given a very generous lead, so I'm gonna follow that up and keep you lads posted.

At first I thought I'd gone too far, but that star did look really strange on the map...

And it turns out my intuition paid off!
