[SPOILER ALERT !!]
Now that I know that Sensor stations can also locate objects on a planet, I deployed one after mis Scientific Officer has told me about containers on planets.
I am in Emerald, the planet is located in the upper right part of the NAV map sector. I succeed in placing my ss, and I have this problem:
In Rear View, a lot of white dots cover the planet (maybe on surface maybe not), but if I change to Top View, all these dots become invisible or move over the sector limit and then they are not selectable. I can select the dots in rear view, but if I can not select the counterpart in the top view I cannot fly to them.
I try now to enter some random Y coordinates, but I think it's vain.
How do you expert guys handle this, any idea?
I hope you understand what I mean, otherwise I will have to put in a screenshot.
Thanks,
XenonS

[SPOILER !!] Problems with the Sensor Station
I know this isn't exactly what you are describing Xenon, but it may be related, so I'm posting here.
The white dots are loose cargo, and if I'm not mistaken they dissipate/burn up falling into atmosphere/get collected by AI over time.
The containers that the Sci OPs says are "on planet" should be purple just like the orbiting/permanent containers. For some reason they do not appear on the sensor when "on planet".
I've already asked if containers within the planet's ring count as "on planet", because there is a purple blip in Emerald's ring, but got no answer.
I've also searched for on-planet containers at planet Aries, and saw no purple blip on the surface with the sensor. Aries does not have a ring, so I guess that answers the question of containers counting as on-planet when within the ring.
So, either there is a bug that is preventing on-planet purple containers from showing up within the bounds of the on-map planet sphere, or it is intentional and in-atmo visual searching is in order.

I'm 99.9% sure that the Science Officer only references the permanent purple blip type cargo boxes.

[SPOILER !!] Problems with the Sensor Station
Hello Rubber, thanks for your input. I can confirm you that amongst the objects displayed by the ss there were 2 purple dots, I was able to fly to one of them.
Other objects spotted by my scientific OPS (e.g. saying "there is a container at 343 pitch 3" will only point to *purple* dots on radar, he has never led me to a white cargo container. Btw, the white ones can contain very expensive items...
Unfortunately, I was destroyed when I returned to the station as it has changed to FED owner, so I will have to replay this situation in Emerald. But I got a similar situation when the station in Riegel asked me to place a sensor station (paid mission). Again, a lot of white dots over the planet and around it, and by switching views (rear view - top view) it was difficult to select objects in BOTH views, necessary to fly to the objects.
I noticed too that some objects seem to be placed *inside* the planet, at least the waypoint suggests that. I guess the object placement is random around a specific distance of the sensor stations, but that's only a guess of mine.
I will probably have to live with the fact that I can not get any object I spot on the sensor station, not getting all you want is part of the game

If you think a white blip is embedded inside a planet, check the 3-D map for confirmation.

I just now tested that theory on Erato II. Many white blips ... but no purple ones (I increased the blip size to make the search easier ... still no luck). From post: 187636, Topic: tid=12630, author=Rubber Chicken wrote:I'm 99.9% sure that the Science Officer only references the permanent purple blip type cargo boxes.

Glacia, Aries, and Emerald, are 3 others I can name that are the same.
The odd thing is that last I checked, Glacia has cargo in space, but the Sci Ops only reports cargo on-planet.

[SPOILER !!] Problems with the Sensor Station
In the case when planets are in the corner of a sector, I have found the ideal place for a sensor station:
Let's say it's the left upper corner of the Nav map. You chose the center of the 4 little squares in both top and rear view. Your ship will be somewhere over the planet so you have to correct the Y coordinate: go in rear view and chose a point safely away from the planet, just above atmosphere. Now manually correct X from -50000 to -49000 which will just make you move 20K away. Now a sensor station is deployable.
With such a position you get minimal dot offsets, and all should be visible in all views.
