Evochron (the first one) and Windows 7 64-bit

Post by OSH »

Hi! Well, I know, Evochron is very old but I have problem with this game on Win 7 64-bit. Game can't start without running as administrator (otherwise I get runtime error 99) and even when it starts, works really slow. I haven't any clue, what cal make such slowdown, because my GFX card (GTX 960) and my CPU (Athlon Phenom X965 3,4 GHz) are quite fast. On Windows XP I have any problems. What is very interesting - older game - RiftSpace - works on my system without any problems. Has someone try to install and run Evochron on Windows 7 64-bit?

The original was made over a decade ago before Windows Vista was even in testing, everything was XP during its development and years after its release. If UAC is active in 7, you will need to launch it at admin level unless you install/move the files to a non-UAC protected location. 2D rendering performance generally took a significant hit when the newer graphics systems of Vista and above were introduced, which the original game heavily depended on. It worked fine on XP, but didn't work very well in Vista and above. While it can technically run in later versions of Windows, you'll often find the performance is much lower. This was one of several reasons why I developed Alliance/2.0 starting in 2006 as a complete replacement and expansion of the original game. So if you want to try out the very original game, it's best suited to XP. If you want to play the oldest version that still works pretty well on Vista and 7, it's best to start with Alliance 2.0.

Thanks Vice. So I have to play on my old laptop. This was a big surpise for me, because RiftSpace and StarWraith series works on Win 7 64-bit flawlessly.

Yup, neither of those two games utilized the level of 2D rendering requirements that Evochron did at the time.
