Info sought: Joystick and other controllers setup

Post by DaveK »

Up until the last EL version (10178), my HOTAS has appeared as Device 1 and a couple of Thrustmaster Cougar MFD's as Devices 2 & 3. With the update the three devices cycled round: 1->3, 2->1 and 3->2

All my carefully set up axis and key allocations didn't follow them. I've tried plugging the controllers in one at a time in different orders but the HOTAS stays as Device 3. Back to the drawing board since the backup files don't work any more :P

EM and EL are very moddable so I'm wondering whether the controller set up can be 'programmed' as well.

*Keymap8 file is 324 lines of numbers;

*sticklist.sw file just lists
Device 1
Device 2
Device 3
with no indication which controller is which;

*ControlProfileX.txt looks promising. On line 11&12 it states
` First, enter the name of the control device template
ControlProfileName__=Saitek X55 Rhino Throttle
but only seems to hold one device - I do have three files so are they for the three devices I have?

So... Have I missed a tutorial somewhere? and if not;

Q1: is it possible for me to choose/change the order the controllers are numbered in so that I can have my HOTAS back to Device 1?

Q2 if I renumber the ControlProfileX.txt files (rename ControlProfile3.txt to ControlProfile1.txt) will the HOTAS become Device 1 again?

Q3: is the assignment 'ControlProfileName__=...' used to determine which profile controls which Device?

Q4: Should I just spend the necessary time to reprogramme the three devices and get back to playing? :P :P

I know I could try these changes out but I'd like to avoid scrambling my main game folder! ;)

Any comments appreciated!

:)

The control devices listed in the 'Load Control Device Profile' menu are prebuilt scripts designed for the devices displayed. So if you have an X52 or X55, there are pre-defined control templates you can load to set up the axis and button controls for each of them. Other devices may come along later as profiles are developed for them (players can create their own if they wish using one of the existing ones as a template for their own custom setup). It's a quick one click load option available for particular devices.
Q1: is it possible for me to choose/change the order the controllers are numbered in so that I can have my HOTAS back to Device 1?
The game submits to the order in Windows (or at least it's supposed to). So if you set the device you want as the 'preferred' device in Windows, it should then show up at the top of the list in the game. To do that, run joy.cpl from the start/search option. Then click on the Advanced button. From the drop down menu, select the device you want to list at the top, then click on OK.
Q2 if I renumber the ControlProfileX.txt files (rename ControlProfile3.txt to ControlProfile1.txt) will the HOTAS become Device 1 again?
No, those are only the control device profile templates.
Q3: is the assignment 'ControlProfileName__=...' used to determine which profile controls which Device?
It provides a description of the device the control profile is designed for.
Q4: Should I just spend the necessary time to reprogramme the three devices and get back to playing?
Once you have them listed in the order you want, it's probably ready to bind controls to.

I have a question Vice, given that it takes the order from windows would it be possible to pull the device description to display the device name instead of just Device 1, Device 2, etc ?

That's what the new control system does, yes.
