Hi, scan for what materials they contain? Not sure you can. You would just use your mining beam, default 'B' key and you get what you get as far as I know.
Cargo scanner works auto on ships and if you hit 'B' on pods it should show you whats in on your HUD. It did that in EM, but I just got one in EL and haven't had time today to play so I haven't verified. I know this morning it was scanning ships automatically.
Edit: I am corrected, and that's awesome to know that this exists. Also, I'm not seeing the contents of a cargo box in space like in EM. I'll keep playing with it.

You'll need a target scanner, available at some high tech systems some of the time. Then target the asteroid you want to scan and fly close to it.

Thanks Vice, the mining tutorial made me wonder. I will go find the scanner somewhere. From post: 182892, Topic: tid=12235, author=Vice wrote: You'll need a target scanner, available at some high tech systems some of the time. Then target the asteroid you want to scan and fly close to it.

Keep in mind that there is an initial quest for both Federation and Alliance pilots. They differ from one another ... mostly keeping to each side's friendly star systems. I suggest that you create a pilot profile for each faction and use them to complete each quest. The follow-on quests are also specific to each side ... but will take you into unfriendly territory.

That's where I found mine. I was also offered one as contraband an NPC wanted rid of. I'm sure I've seen it for sale, but that might have been a special offer. From post: 182921, Topic: tid=12235, author=Marvin wrote:Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you can find the template for a target scanner in a data drive somewhere. I am having a bit of a problem with targeting asteroids at the moment. A few days ago, before the last update, I could target them just fine with the Y key. That doesn't seem to be working any longer. I can still target ships, though. Do we need the target scanner now to even target asteroids?

No. I was targeting them today during a contract. I've reassigned the hot key to my joystick but otherwise I see no difference.
